There was a far greater company at the turning out the deer, before his Majesty’s
hounds at the Golden Ball, near Wokingham, on Monday last, than has been present at
any hunt the whole season. At 10 o’clock his Majesty arrived, soon after which the
chase commenced. The wood in which the deer was released, was so completely
surrounded by foot people, that it was some time before the hounds could make him
break cover; but being hard pressed, he dashed out, and passing the whole company,
made for the commons, from whence he went, nearly in a direct line, to Wargrave,
where he crossed the Thames. Keeping near the river side, he made towards this town,
and after a very hard chace of about two hours and a half, was taken in a meadow
belonging to Mr. Benwell of Caversham Farm. His Majesty was ferried over the water
at Wargrave, and was present when the deer was taken, with about a third of the
company that began the hunt. His Majesty took a post-coach at the Crown inn here,
and returned to Windsor at three o’clock.
On Thursday last another deer was turned out before his Majesty’s hounds near
Bracknell, which afforded excellent sport. It is supposed he ran ten miles at one burst,
six of which were in view. Only a few of the oldest sportsmen could keep up with the
hounds, which they stopped for about a quarter of an hour till his Majesty came up,
when the chace was renewed, which did not continue above half an hour longer,
before the deer was killed by the hounds near Arborfield, in this county.

His Majesty has been graciously pleased to appoint Mr. Wise of Wokingham, and
Mr. Secker of Windsor, Attornies at Law, to the office of Stewards of all the
Lordships, Manor, Lands, Tenements, and Hereditaments belonging to his Majesty’s
Honor and Castle of Windsor, and of all the Courts of Record in the same, and Clerks
to the Constable of the said Castle; in the room of Humphrey Hackshaw, Esq., and
Mr. John Norton, both deceased.

WOKINGHAM BERKS

good kitchen, four bed-chambers, and two large garrets, with a large garden walled in
and well planted; a wash-house, fuel-house, and every suitable CONVENIENCE for s
small family wishing to live retired, and may be entered upon immediately if required;
now in the occupation of the Rev. Mr. Bremner.
