the rate of 103 in the next two years, were due to be produced but there had been a
delay and buses were being borrowed from Oxford to help the situation until the new
vehicles were in operation. Unremunerative journeys had to be constantly reviewed
and many rural services which should have been discontinued were kept on as a
service to the public.
Mr. Flower quoted Reading with its contra traffic flow lanes and access to the
shopping precinct as a good example in the use of buses.
“As to the future,” said Mr. Flower, “the company will co-operate fully with the
new counties transport planning.”
WOKINGHAM SCOUT AWARDS
Presentations of several Gold Arrow Badges, three medals of Merit and a Silver
Acorn Award were made at the Wokingham District Scouts annual meeting last week.
As Scout Leaders, Scouts and parents crowded the Methodist Church Hall, Rose
Street, the President, Sir John Marling welcomed the recently elected County
commissioner, Major Michael Paxton, and announced the success of the recent adult
recruiting drive.
District Commissioner, Mr. Stanley Batchelor said that as a result of the drive they
now had three helpers for Guides, 11 Scout Leaders; 14 instructors and 15 supporters
but still needed lay people for canoe instruction. He said that the Scouting population
had grown 200% in the last ten years and was still expanding. In September a new
Group would be formed at the Methodist Church in Rose Street.
The Secretary, Mr. Peter Larew, who had to resign due to pressure of work, and his
wife Jane were presented with gifts in appreciation of their work. Miss Christine
Brett, was awarded the “Thanks” badge for her services.

A new trophy provided by the Wokingham Division of the St. John Ambulance

Brigade was competed for at the 16 Wokingham Pony Show and Gymkhana held at
the Carnival Field, Wellington Road, on Monday. The event was organised by the
Garth Hunt Branch of the Pony Club in aid of the Wokingham St. John Brigade.
