DISMAY AS CLINIC IS AXED
The Berkshire Health Authority board has decided to close Wokingham’s Family
Planning Clinic as part of £200,000 cuts to the family planning budget. Young people
will now have to trek to Reading or Bracknell for help.
A Berkshire Health Authority spokesman said that there was no evidence that such a
move will lead to more pregnancies. The Wokingham clinic was closed because there
were concerns over the level of demand. Young people in particular responded to a
survey undertaken a few years ago which revealed that they were quite happy to travel
to another area because that safeguarded their anonymity.
The clinic at Wokingham Hospital is due to close on the 1st October when staff will
be offered alternative positions by the Royal Berkshire and Battle Hospitals Trust.
