reputable inhabitants. There will be an invitation ball in the Town-hall in the evening
which we are sure will be fully attended, as the greatest care and taste will be
exercised to render it in every respect worthy the occasion.
It is intended also to roast a fat ox whole in the Market-place, to be given away
amongst the poor of the parish of Wokingham, and should the contributions prove
sufficient, other proposals for adding to the amusements as well as the distribution of
meat, will be carried out.

THE ROYAL WEDDING
The preparations for celebrating the happy event in our town, we are pleased to say,
are nearly completed, and Monday next will indeed be a day long to be remembered
here. As we announced in our last, it is intended to roast a fat ox whole in our Market-
place, the beef to be given to the poor, and the Committee intend issuing tickets,
entitling the holder to receive a portion, and also a loaf of bread with it.
The cooking apparatus built in the centre of the Market-place, is an object of much
curiosity, and has been erected and fitted up gratuitously by our patriotic tradesmen.
The doomed ox gaily decorated with ribbons, was exhibited in the market on Tuesday
last.
The arrangements for the ball are also perfected, and from the eager demand for the
tickets our old Town-hall will, we are sure, be graced by one of the most loyal
numerous assemblies of the votaries of Terpsichore ever congregated within its walls.
We trust, as far as practicable, business will be suspended on the day, in order that as
many as possible may participate in the enjoyment of the festivities provided.

MARRIAGE WITH A DECEASED WIFE’S SISTER
We understand that several of the inhabitants of this town who regard the existing
law which prohibits these marriages, as a source of much inconvenience and injustice,
have prepared petitions to the Houses of Parliament, setting forth the grounds on
which their objections are founded, and praying that such a measure may be passed
as to legalise marriage under the circumstances, and for the reasons therein set forth,
they have placed one of these petitions at Mr. Gotelee’s library for signature, by those
who entertain similar views on the subject. It is requested that it may be signed in the
course of the ensuing week, in order that it may be presented the following week,
when Viscount Bury intends to bring the subject under the consideration of the House
of Commons.
