GIRLS’ FRIENDLY SOCIETY
On Monday last, the annual gathering of the associates and members of the branch
of this society which has been formed for the deanery of Sonning took place at
Wokingham. The day was very fine and the meeting in every way a great success. The
party consisting of about 100 servant girls, with the ladies and friends who have
interested themselves in this good work, assembled in the Rectory garden at three
o’clock, and after an hour spent in amusement and consultation, they proceeded to the
parish church, where a short service of prayer and praise was held, and a practical
address was delivered by the Vicar of Wargrave
Tea was provided in the Palmer Schools which were tastefully ornamented and
prepared by kind friends, and a very happy afternoon was spent by all. The Rector
addressed the girls and spoke to them of the great value of such associations. He said
that young servants were guilty of faults and got into trouble from mere
thoughtlessness, and it would be the greater help and encouragement to them to feel
that they belonged to a society, and could always look to a kind lady as a friend and
advisor. It was well known how young people who had not much experience of life
were helped by a society. The Rector spoke in terms of warm commendation of the
labours of Miss Bart, who had established the society and conducted its affairs with so
much efficiency and success. He added he could not perceive a more useful and
practical way of helping a class that greatly needed sympathy and assistance, and he
hoped that branches would be established in every deanery in the kingdom.
