The Rev. J.F. Llewellyn and Mr. H. Roberts. Mr. Murdoch was chosen president, and
                   the  Rev.  J.T.  Brown  vice-president,  and  Mr.  Heron  secretary.  A  full  report  of  the
                   proceedings was prepared, but in consequence of the space occupied by the Berkshire
                   Sessions and other reports, it is unavoidably omitted.

                                                  THE PHONOGRAPH
                      On Tuesday evening a lecture on the phonograph was given in the Town Hall. There
                   was a small audience, but the experiments were very successfully made, and afforded
                   much interest to those present.

                      The Wokingham Voluntary Fire Brigade have been invited by the Lord Mayor of
                   the  City  of  London  to  take  part  with  other  Provincial  Brigades  representing  the

                      The annual ball given by Mr. J. Walter M.P. to his tradespeople which was to have
                   taken  place  on  Tuesday,  and  the  Volunteer  Ball,  which  had  been  arranged  for
                   Wednesday last in the Town Hall have both been postponed in consequence of the
                   snow storm.

                                              THE STATE OF THE POOR
                      A  public  meeting  was  convened  in  the  Town  Hall  at  noon  on  Thursday,  by  the
                   Alderman, to take into consideration the best means of relieving  the stress existing
                   amongst the labouring classes in the town, consequent upon the severe weather lately
                   experienced. A committee composed of the clergy and ministers of all denominations,
                   several of the neighbouring gentry, and some of the principal inhabitants of the town,
                   was formed to solicit subscriptions and distribute, in the most feasible manner, the
                   results  amongst  the  needy  and  destitute.  Subscriptions  to  a  large  amount  were
                   promised in the room.

                                                   VOLUNTEER BALL
                      The  annual  ball  of  the  L  detachment  of  Berks  Rifle  Volunteers,  which  was

                   postponed from the 19  inst, on account of the inclement weather, took place in the
                   Town  Hall  last  Thursday  evening.  The  hall  was  very  tastefully  decorated  for  the
                   occasion.  Mr.  W.  Chambers,  of  the  Market-place,  supplied  the  refreshments.  An
                   efficient band from Reading was engaged, dancing commenced soon after 9 p.m.


                                            THE WOKINGHAM INSTITUTE
                      The annual meeting of the members of this institution took place on Monday, the

                   17  inst., Mr. T.S. Brown in the chair. From the report it appeared that the income for

                   the year 1880 (including the balance of £11 10s 4d. on December 31 , 1879), was £48
                   15s  1d.,  and  the  expenditure  for  the  same  period  £36  7s.  10d.,  leaving  a  present
                   balance of  £12 7s 3d. Mr. D.N. Heron, who for several years has filled the post of
