THE OLD CORPORATION
On Saturday a special meeting of this body was held for the purpose of balancing
the accounts to be handed over to the new Corporation on the following Monday. The
Town Clerk (Mr. Frankum) produced the accounts which showed the sum of £600
invested in consols, £100 6s. 6d.at the bankers’, and £? 9s. 1d. in the hands of the
Town Clerk, which sums, after paying the cost of obtaining the new Charter became

vested in the new Corporation on the 9 inst. They were accordingly ordered to be
paid over to the new Borough treasurer when appointed. A resolution was proposed
and unanimously agreed upon that the members of the old Corporation on their
dissolution begged to record their high opinion of the valuable and efficient services
of their Town Clerk, Mr. Edward Frankum, in all matters relating to the office, and
the accurate and satisfactory manner in which he had kept the accounts relating to
Corporation property, for which they tendered him their best thanks.
THE ELECTION OF THE FIRST MAYOR
On Monday evening, following the meeting of the newly-elected Town Council, the
Mayor (Mr. T.M. Wescott) provided a banquet in the Town Hall, invitations being
limited to the members of the Corporation and of the old Local Board. At 7 pm people
from the town and district began to assemble in large numbers in the Market-place,
where the Wokingham Brass Band was in attendance, and indulged in the letting off
of fireworks and other entertainments. At 8 pm a torchlight procession passed,
preceded by the band, most of the torchbearers being decked out in grotesque fashion.
Afterwards there was a bonfire on Langborough Recreation Ground where also a
display of fireworks was given by Messrs. Robini. Messrs H. Marlow and his
committee deserve much praise for their efforts to provide amusement on the
occasion. Over 2,000 people assembled.
VACANCIES IN THE TOWN COUNCIL

A second election will be held on the 23 inst. To choose four Councillors to fill the
places of Messrs. Wescott, Goodchild, Moorcock and Martin who have been elected

Aldermen. Seven of the unsuccessful candidates on the 9 inst. will be again
nominated, and a number of new aspirants are expected to enter the field.

VACANCIES IN THE TOWN COUNCIL
The appointment of Messrs. Martin, Wescott, Goodchild and Moorcock to the office
of Alderman leaves four vacancies in the Wokingham Town Council which will be
filled up on Monday next. Eleven candidates were nominated but two of these
withdrew their candidature leaving nine who will go to the poll.

Mr. H.T. Roberts was appointed Town Clerk at the first council meeting on the 9
November.

TOWN COUNCIL ELECTION
The Municipal Election to fill the four vacancies in the Town Council caused by the
appointment of four of its members to the position of Alderman took place on
Monday, at the Town Hall between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm. There were nine
