Miss De Vitre. The provision of light refreshments proved to be a lucrative branch of
the show, all the refreshments being the gifts of members of the congregations and of
the members of other denominations. Mrs. Collis and Mrs. Hollis were in charge, and
they were assisted by Mesdames Onslow, Barry, R.H. Watts, W. Smith, Misses
                   Desbois and Walter.
Throughout the afternoon and evening a succession of concerts and entertainments
were presented. Had the weather been propitious these would have taken place on the
lawn, but by the kindness of Miss Elllison rooms in the house were placed at the
disposal of the committee. In the afternoon children of King Arthur Schools, who
were present by permission of Misses Dillon Clark, gave an excellent rendering of
“Cophetua and the Beggar Maid.” This was followed by prettily presented maypole
dances by infants of St. Paul’s Schools, under the direction of Miss Liddiard, and folk
dances by Wokingham ladies who are members of the Reading Folk Dance Society.
After tea a performance of “Mechanical Jane” was played by Misses De Vitre and
Miss Gregorie, and in the evening an excellent concert arranged by Mr. A. Lusty
(organist at St. Paul’s Church), took place in the Drill Hall. There was a large
attendance and the well-varied programme was much enjoyed. Items were contributed
by Miss Plumridge (contralto), Miss Rumming (violin), Mr. F. Burkett (comedian),
and Mr. Turner (tenor). Incidental music was played by an instrumental quartet,
comprising Mr. Henlé (piano), Miss Gregorie (violin), Mr. H Maidment (violin), Mr.
C Gregorie (flute), and Mr. Mavois (‘cello). The quartet also played at intervals
                   during the afternoon.
The evening concluded with a dance at the Drill Hall, music being provided by the
                   Town Band.
It is hoped to make the effort an annual one. Mr. H.T. Scott carried out the arduous
duties of hon. secretary, and the social committee which was responsible for the
arrangements comprised Messrs. White, Adams, Udell, Barratt, Moore, Pocock and
Tarrant; and the advertising committee consisted of the Rev. C Nightingale, Messrs.
                   H. T. Scott and Mr. T. Hawkins.

                                                  GARDEN CONCERT
By the invitation of the Rector (the Rev. H.M. Walter), the Town Band played for
dancing on the St. Paul’s Rectory lawn on Monday evening.

                                                        TENNIS
Owing to a misunderstanding the result of a lawn tennis match between the Town
and Milton Road Clubs reported last week, was stated to have been a victory for the
former club. The match was won by the Milton Road Club.

                                                    TERRITORIALS
Local Territorials held a week-end camp at Finchampstead, from Saturday till
Monday, when 91 ranks, including the band, attended under command of Captain
A.C. Hughes. Despite unfavourable weather an enjoyable time was spent and
considerable useful musketry work accomplished. A prize of 10s., offered by Captain
Hughes for distance judging, was won by Lance-Corporal F.H. Beezeley

                                                     WHIST DRIVE
With a view of augmenting the funds of the Military Band, a successful whist drive
and dance was held in the Drill Hall on Wednesday evening. There was a very large
attendance, and prizes for the whist were presented by Mrs. Fallar to the following
