CONVENT FETE
The Convent of the Presentation, Wokingham, held their annual fête on Saturday in
aid of the school funds. Fortunate with the weather, the fête was a great success, and
the stalls, managed by the children, were well patronised. A popular feature during the
afternoon was the dancing on the lawns, and many of the patrons and friends joined
in.
A GOOD START
Mr. F.W.S. Bagulay, librarian of the Wokingham branch of the County Library, is
well pleased with the response to his recent appeal for help in compiling an index of
local organisations and the upkeep of a social calendar, although, he says, it will take
about a year for the scheme to prove its value. Mr. Bagulay is, however, anxious for
still more clubs and organisations to get in touch with him.
SAVINGS COMMITTEE SOCIAL
The Wokingham National Savings Street Group Sub-Committee held another
successful social and old-time dance in the Church House, Wokingham, on Tuesday
afternoon. Their guests during the afternoon were Mrs. Wells, secretary of the Slough
Industrial Group, and the assistant commissioner for Slough, Mr. Allinson. Ken Car
provided the music for dancing, and the M.C. was Mrs. Carpenter.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
What will probably be the last Coronation outing from the borough was enjoyed on
Sunday by over forty children from the Market Place and Denmark Street. And not
only the children had a good day out—for many parents and friends (three coach
loads in all) spent the day at Littlehampton. There, as well as swimming, the children
took part in an impromptu sports meeting. As a mark of their appreciation the children
presented Mrs. G. Bosher (who, with her husband, organised the outing) with a
bouquet and a brooch.
BAPTISTS’ RALLY
Over 120 members of the Baptist Men’s Movement throughout the county, and
Oxford and Slough, held their annual summer rally at the Milton Road Church,
Wokingham on Tuesday evening. The chair was taken by Mr. H.F. Maton, of Slough,
president of the Berkshire branch of the movement. The principal speaker at the rally
was Mr. J.W. Beaumont, of Harrow, president of the London Baptist Men’s
Movement. In the course of his address, Mr. Beaumont stressed the necessity for men
to take an active part in the life of the church.
