Deputy  Director  of  the  Tea  Research  Institute  of  East  Africa  and  four  years  later
                   succeeded to the Directorship, a post he held until 1961.
                      Dr. Child, who is 61, belongs to numerous learned societies. In addition to being a
                   Fellow  of  the  Royal  Institute  of  Chemistry,  he  is  a  life  member  of  the  Chemical
                   Society  and  the  Society  of  Chemical  Industry.  He  also  belongs  to  the  American
                   Chemical Society, was a founder member of the Chemical Society of Ceylon and its
                   president  from  1944-1946.  The  following  year  Dr.  Child  was  the  president  of  the
                   physical sciences section of the Ceylon Association of Science and became the 1956
                   and  1957  chairman  of  the  East  Africa  local  section  of  the  Royal  Institute  of
                   Chemistry.

                                                     MUSIC CLUB
                      At the October meeting of the Music Club members heard a music and verse recital
                   given by Anthony Hill and Oliver Cox. Their programme included items by Chopin,
                   Bartok and Tennyson and original works by both artists and two poems by T.S. Elliot
                   set to music by Mr. Hill.


                                                  MISSION FESTIVAL
                      A special festival was held at All Saints Church, Wokingham, on Wednesday as part
                   of the Sonning Deanery Mission Festival. The preacher was the Rev. P. Burns, a New
                   Zealander. The service  was  followed by a meeting  in  the  church house at  which a
                   film, “Journey into India” was shown.

                                                       FIRST AID
                      Wokingham  Civil  Defence  workers  who  had  successfully  completed  first-aid
                   courses were presented with medallions and certificates at the training headquarters,
                   Denmark Street, Wokingham, on Thursday, by Ald. Miss D.M. Finch.

                                                     TOWN CRIER
                      Tuesday’s  meeting  of  the  Wokingham  Town  Council’s  General  Purposes
                   Committee gave approval to a suggestion that a town crier should be appointed. The
                   proposal came from Cllr. E.J. West who pointed out that it was four and a half years
                   since Wokingham had a town crier. The Establishment Committee is to discuss the
                   matter.

                                                    NEW OFFICERS
                      People who hunt animals in order to kill them were strongly criticised at the annual
                   meeting of the Wokingham and District Society Against Cruel Sports, at Wokingham
                   Town Hall on Monday. Officers  elected:  Chairman, Miss  M.  Cole; secretary, Mrs.
                   N.E. Whiting; treasurer, Mrs. J. Wade.

                                               INFORMATION SESSION
                      Further  details  of  the  proposals  concerning  the  redevelopment  of  the  centre  of
                   Wokingham  were  available  to  the  public  when  officials  of  the  County  Planning
                   Department  held  an  “information  session”  in  the  Wokingham  Town  Hall  on
                   Wednesday.
