               8 Market Place – The Roebuck public House was built in the 16  century and extended over
               time. Part of the building was owned by Buckmaster & Wood, who were ironmongers,
               plumbers and water & sanitary engineers. The publican in 1900 was Thomas Whatley who
               remained until 1904.

               12 Market Place – George Cope was running his grocer business and had been doing so
               since 1891, having previously been a grocer in Peach Street. George died in 1918 and his
               son, also called George took over.

               14&15 Market Place was The Wheatsheaf Inn which remained open until 1986.























               18 Market Place was a grocer, Alexander Grover ,who moved to Wokingham in the 1890s.
               He retired in 1891 and the shop was run by his son William with his grandson as an
               assistant. The business went into liquidation the following year.
               22 Market Place – Daniel Heron’s Wine Vaults which he was to run for over 40 years. He
               was major of Wokingham in 1890, 1897, 1908 and 1909. In addition to his civic duties he
               was a trustee of Wokingham Savings Bank; treasurer of the Wokingham Men’s Club and
               member of the Wokingham Urban Sub-Committee.
