1936
Harry Hawkins, Confectioner started running Ye Tuck Shop at 7 Market Place. He was a
volunteer fireman and would close the shop when the Fire Alarm sounded and run to the
Town Hall, where the fire engines were kept. Harry remained at these premises until 1968. It
is currently the home of the Sultan Balti Palace restaurant.
Situated next to the Redan public house, Somerscales supplied fish and chips both before and
after the Second World War.
1937
The Queens Arms at 23 Rose Street and the Wellington Arms were mentioned for the last time
1938
Over 2,000 people flocked to Frog Hall Meadow, London Road, Wokingham, for the
Wokingham Horticultural Association’s first show and gymkhana, which included an exhibit
by the Wokingham Bee-Keepers’ Society.
1939
Rationing was introduced by the British government at the start of the Second World War in
1939.
