the expediency of advising her Majesty to grant a charter, extending the Municipal
Corporations Act to the town of Wokingham, and whether it is expedient that any
adjoining district should be included if a charter of incorporation be granted. At the
inquiry an opportunity will be afforded to the inhabitants to state their views to the
Commissioners. In the event of no charter being granted, the future management of
the town will be vested in the Local Board, and the magisterial business carried on by
the county justices. In the meantime the Corporation property cannot be dealt with by
sale, but the charities vested in the Corporation will continue to be administered
heretofore until a fresh scheme is prepared by the Charity Commissioners.

LOCAL BOARD MEETING
The surveyor was instructed to lay down stone crossings at the junctions of Broad-
street and Shute End; Peach-street and the Market-place; and Denmark-street and the
Market-place. The Board then further considered the question of naming the streets
and numbering the houses and also a report presentation by the Survey Committee
upon the subject when it was resolved to affix the names of the streets and highways
on enamelled plates.

SUCCESS OF THE WOKINGHAM VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE
Under the auspices of the Chiswick Volunteer Fire Brigade, a competition for gold
and silver medals was held in Sutton Park on Thursday. Brigades from Acton,
Brighton, Chiswick, Colnbrook, Croydon, Ealing, Edenbridge, Hampton Court
Palace, Hanwell, Leyton, Putton Sutton, Twickenham, Uxbridge, Watford,
Willesden,, and Wokingham, took art in the contest. The Wokingham Brigade
travelled to Sutton by train on Thursday morning. At the Wokingham Station, before
the departure of the Brigade, the excellent physique and cleanly equipment of the men
was favourably commented on, and during the day the fully earned the eulogies
passed upon them.
Out of four competitions for medals, the Wokingham Brigade came off victorious in
three, losing the fourth (the four men drill) by less than a second. The following were
the prizes won:-Single-man drill, gold medal, Mr. C. Brant; two-men drill, two gold
and silver medals, Mr. C. Brant and Mr. Aiger; six-men drill (with officer), 7 silver
medals, Messrs. Ifould, Brant, Caiger, Green, Chambers, Hatton and Hall.
CRICKET
The return match between Chertsey and Wokingham was played at the former place

on the 16 inst., and resulted in favour of Wokingham, who scored 144 in one
innings, against 37 and 39 by their opponents. For the winners Cotterell made 16,
Hutson 28, Gater 14, Vandyke 32, and Skelton 20. For Chertsey, Lowell made 15 and

Patterns of blue enamelled plates for the names of the streets were produced and one
was selected the letters of which were three inches long.
