LAWN TENNIS TOURNAMENT AND DANCE
The third annual invitation lawn tennis tournament took place on the Cricket
th
Ground, Wokingham, on the 11 and three days following. The matches were played
on the American system throughout, all competitors being handicapped. The first day
was devoted to mixed doubles in which there were 61 entries. The gentlemen’s
singled occupied the second day, while the third was set aside for the ladies’ singles.
The finals were all decided on the last day, in the presence of a large company and in
summerlike weather. Mr. Churchman of the Rose Hotel, supplied the refreshments.
The tournament was followed by a ball in the Drill Hall on the following evening, at
which a large number of the competitors with their friends were present. The band
was supplied by Mr. Martin of Yorktown, and the supper was satisfactorily served by
Mr. Chambers, of the Market-place. The arrangements for the tournament and dance
were carried out by Mr. F.E. Tomlinson, assisted by a committee of gentlemen in
Wokingham and the neighbourhood.

SPECIAL MEETING OF THE TOWN COUNCIL
On Thursday last a special meeting was held, when there were present the Mayor
(Councillor Mower), Aldermen Heelas, Heron and Wescott, Councillors White,
Knight, Phillips, G. Sale, P. Sale and Seaward. The Town Clerk read a petition against
the Thames Conservancy Bill, 1894, to which the Corporate Seal was affixed. A letter
was read from the Thames Conservators with reference to the Sewage Farm, which
was considered, and the question was referred to the Survey Committee. The
Surveyor was instructed to proceed with the new drain to carry off the surface water
from the Station-road and Barkham-road. Instructions were also given for an
inspection of shop window blinds with a view to require them to be raised to the
prescribed height.
A RUNAWAY COW
Some commotion was caused on Wednesday evening by a Jersey cow escaping
from one of the railway trucks at the station. After an exciting chase down the line and
over various fences the runaway was captured and led with halters into a shed
belonging to Mr. Smith, and on Thursday was taken to Binfield.

THE WATER SUPPLY
Another special notice has been issued by the Water Company during the week to
consumers stating that, “Owing to the present drought the directors find it necessary
to cut off the supply during the hours from twelve at noon till six o’clock in the

morning. The reduction began on Monday, 9 The directors state they will if possible
reduce the number of hours (18 out of the 24) during which the water will be cut off
from time to time.

FORESTERS FETE
The Ancient Order of Foresters, Court “Leo” (5078), Wokingham held their annual
th
rural Fete on Wednesday, July 25 in a meadow in the Wellington-road, kindly lent
by Mr. W.T. Martin. The members of the club started in procession from the Court
House and paraded the town at midday, headed by the Town Band. Athletic sports
