THE MAYOR’S GIFT TO THE TOWN
The illuminated dials, the gift of Mr. Councillor Phillips have been affixed to the
Town Hall clock and have been in use this week. The work has been successfully
carried out by Messrs. Bracher and Sydenham, of Reading.

PROMENADE CONCERT
The Wokingham All Saints’ Parish Band gave their third promenade concert on
Monday evening at “The Brook” by permission of Colonel Gordon Young. The
grounds and lake were illuminated and there was a good attendance of visitors.
Unfortunately two persons were immersed in the lake through the upsetting of a boat,
but they escaped with a wetting.
AGRICULTURE AND GENERAL WORKERS’ UNION
A lively meeting was held on Monday evening, in the Market-place, of members of
this society. An address was delivered by Mr. Quelch on should Trade Unionists
support the Tory, Liberal or Socialist Party?”
AN INFURIATED COW
Traffic through the town was at a standstill on Saturday afternoon, caused by the
vagaries of a cow being driven through the town. All attempts at capture were futile.
Two men, named Wise and Ilsley, were injured, the former somewhat seriously in the
wrist. The borough water cart was backed towards the animal, and the water turned
on, but the cart was charged again and again. Other cows were brought, and the
infuriated animal joined the herd, and was eventually placed in a meadow near the
town.

TOTAL ABSTINENCE SOCIETY
A public meeting in connection with this society was held in the Town Hall on
Monday evening, when an address was given by Alderman C. Clements, of Henley.
Recitations, music, &c., were given by Mrs. Clements, Miss Kirk, and others. The
Rev. J. Cave presided. A social evening was held on Wednesday at the Church Room.
A debate was introduced by Counc. P. Sale, who moved “That it is the duty of every
Temperance elector to refuse to support any candidate who will not pledge himself to
Temperance legislation.” Opposition was led by Mr. F. Hawkins, jun., and a
discussion ensued.
DANCE AT THE DRILL HALL
A very successful dance was held in the Drill Hall, o Monday evening when about
140 persons assembled.
ENTERTAINMENT AT THE WORKHOUSE
Councillor Seaward provided a long and varied entertainment of music, &c., on
Wednesday Evening for the inmates of the Workhouse.
