through the town, collected the market tolls and proclaimed royal proclamations for a
period extending far back beyond the time of any living Wokinghamites. Father,
grandfather and great-uncles of Mr. Wm. Chambers have for long years sustained an
honourable position under the present Corporation and its predecessor, the
Wokingham Local Board. In quaint costume and with equally quaint character, one
Tom Chambers still lingers in the memories of “the oldest inhabitants” as town crier,
sexton and general town’s official. “The old order changeth, giving place to the new.”
May the town still flourish under the new regime as it has done under the old.
The Wokingham Town Band played a selection of music on Sunday afternoon (Mr.
W. Farr conducting), when a collection was taken in aid of the funds of the Royal
Berkshire Hospital.
FOOTBALL
On Saturday last Wokingham Athletic opened their season on the Wiltshire-road
ground by entertaining Reading Y.M.C.A. before about 100 spectators. The game
resulted in an overwhelming victory for the Athletics, who led by 7-0 at half-time, and
14-0 at full time. It was sufficient, however, to show that the locals have secured two
splendid new men in Drake and Hope. The goals were secured by Phippe (10),
Thatcher (2), and Jarvis (2).
RIFLE CLUB
The cup challenge competition was brought to a close with a shoot at the range on
Wednesday afternoon. The winner was Mr. A.G. Hall, with a score of 95 points. He
becomes the holder of the cup for the year, a replica being presented to him. The
monthly spoon shoot was held at the same place, Mr. A.G. Hall being the winner of
the “skilled shot” badge with 95 points, Mr. T.E. Ellison winning the club spoon with
98 points (15 added). Mr. P.W. Teague won the second spoon with some 95 points
(five added.)

TWO FINE PIKE
Two fine pike were successfully landed on Monday from the Loddon by Mr. W.
Reynolds, assisted by Mr. Holloway, of Wokingham. One weighed 12 lb. and the
other 10½. Strange to say both were caught in the same place and within a quarter of
an hour of each other.
