Corps. In the rear of this room is another smaller one, through which the range itself is
reached, via a courtyard and flight of steps. The range proper is admirably adapted for
the purpose, full advantage having been taken of the natural rise in the ground. The
targets lie at the further end, where a wall of double thickness ensures the safe
stoppage of all shots. The targets and markers occupy a pit, the markers having on
each side a substantial mound of earth and batten behind which to shelter. A few feet
nearer the firing station is a trench constructed and arranged for “running man” and
“disappearing” targets. The whole building is 144 feet in length, with a width of 24
feet, and is admirably lighted, ventilated and warmed, with every appliance for target
practice, including an inclined platform for the prone position when firing.

Fishing in the Loddon, on Tuesday, Mr. E. Holloway, of Wokingham, successfully
landed a pike, in good condition, weighing 14½ lbs. Also a smaller one, which turned
                   the scales at 4½ lbs.

The Rev. A.P. Carr has been presented by the members of this club with a solid
silver cigarette case, beautifully engraved, and with initials on the front, as a slight
recognition of the valuable services he has rendered the club for the past eight years.
Mr. A.H. Jones (the hon. sec.), has received a very nice letter from Mr. Carr who
                   wishes the club every success.
                                                          FIRE
A fire occurred on Tuesday morning in the centre of the town at premises occupied
by Mrs. K. Pigg, confectioner, etc. It seems that the attention of an employee of Mrs.
Pigg’s was called by a passer by to smoke issuing from the roof of a building (the
bake-house) in Rose-street. It was soon discovered that a fire had broken out in a
room above the bake-house used as a drying room. The fire brigade were summoned,
and, quickly arriving at the spot, they put in some prompt and excellent work, the
hose being connected with one of the street hydrants. The flames at one time broke
through the roof, but were very soon subdued. The damage was fortunately confined
to the building in which the outbreak started. This was a fortunate circumstance, as
the building is directly attached to the house itself, and outbuildings are also clustered
thickly around. The damage is, we understand, covered by insurance. The oven was
not damaged. Mr. G.A. Pigg, it may be mentioned, is himself a member of the
                   Wokingham Fire Brigade.
