Vitre was educated at Eton, and, later at Cambridge, and studied law, and was called
to the Bar, but he never practised. He married his cousin, Miss Blanche De Vitre,
daughter of General De Vitre.
For 28 years the deceased gentleman was a Volunteer or Territorial officer, and was

for a long period in command of the Wokingham Company of the 4 Battalion Royal
Berkshire Regiment, retiring with the rank of Major. On the outbreak of war in 1914
he was appointed recruiting officer at Wokingham, which appointment he held
throughout the war.
He served on the Berkshire County Council as member of the Wokingham Without,
taking the place of the late Mr. A.F. Walter, but in 1919, on seeking re-election, he
was defeated by Mr. George Ford.
In November, 1912, he was elected on the Wokingham Royal District Council and
Board of Guardians, vice the late Alderman T.M. Wescott. These positions he held
until 1919, being vice-chairman of the two bodies, and chairman of the Finance
Committee. In 1919 he was defeated at the election by Mr. H.E. Bennett.
He was a member of the Wokingham (Without) Parish Council, since its formation
in 1894, was vice-chairman, and then chairman, which latter office he has held for a
long period.
As Parish Council representative, he served on the Committee of Managers of St.
Paul’s Schools, Wokingham. He has also for many years acted as Rector’s
Churchwarden of St. Paul’s Church, which he has attended regularly.
He was director and chairman of the Board of the Wokingham District Water
Company.
Politically the deceased gentleman was a staunch Conservative, and was for many
years chairman of the Wokingham Conservative and Unionist Association, being
succeeded in that office quite recently by Mr. J.M.H. Upfil.
Mr. De Vitre was one of the trustees of Wokingham United Charities, was a
member of the Garth Hunt, and of the Ball Committee of that hunt.
