LABOUR PARTY MEETING
Mr. Drew (member of the Reading Board of Guardians) presided on Saturday
evening over a Labour meeting, held in the Market Place, Wokingham. Dr.
Somerville Hastings, ex-M.P. for Reading, was unavoidably absent. Mr. Wilson
(Ruskin College, Oxford) and three other students were also present. The chairman
announced the object of the meeting was to raise funds for the relief of the miners and
their families, and the police had sanctioned a collection being taken for that purpose.
Mr. Wilson advised his hearers to “take no notice of silly talk in the papers about red
gold coming into England” in connection with the mining industry. The labour Party
supported the principle that all men were brothers. The Trade Union movement was
international and that was why the Russian Trade Unions were helping the miners of
Britain, as the British Trade Unions had helped German strikers in Hamburg some
years ago.
