accompanied the songs and dances. Recitations were given by D. Fletcher and J.
Fairs, while Freda Palmer contributed a song. A country play was given by Guide
officers and members. The characters were taken by Miss Finch, Miss Palsford, P.L.
M. Cooper, P.L.E. Wilson, Guide P. love and Guide E. Band. The staging gave
excellent scope for some well-executed old English dances. The visitors included Mrs.
F. Pigott, Mrs. Dyke Marsh, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. De Vitre, Miss Robinson, Mrs. W.
Irving, Miss Speers, Mr. and Mrs. Canning, Rev. H. Farington Evans, Miss Fletcher,
Mrs Benito, Rev. W.H. Wright, the Misses Ellison, Mrs. W.G. Jefferies, etc.
PALMER SCHOOLS
The annual distribution of certificates at the Palmer Schools, Wokingham took place
last week. Among the visitors were the Rector and Mrs. Long, the Mayor (Admiral
Eustace), Mr. F.E. Chapman and Commander and Mrs. Greenfield. Mr. Chapman
read a letter from Mrs. Murdoch, in which she expressed her regret at being absent,
and at the same time thanked Mr. Maidment and Miss Jones for their splendid care of
the children. Songs were sung by the scholars and Mrs. Greenfield who has recently
been appointed one of the managers, presented the certificates. The Rector, on behalf
of the managers, said they were proud of their school, and congratulated the staff and
scholars on their recent successes. Mr. Maidment (the headmaster) referred to the
loyal and willing service of the staff, and in this connection particularly thanked Miss
Jones and her staff for the excellent preparatory work done in the infants’ department.
He also expressed his appreciation of the work rendered so cheerfully by the school
caretaker, Mr. Wheeler. On Saturday a party of 70 children and friends of the Palmer
Schools visited Bognor.

BAPTIST S.S. JUMBLE SALE
Organised by the teachers, a jumble sale was carried out on Wednesday in the
Baptist Sunday School Room, Milton Road, and realised close upon £20 for the
Sunday School funds.
EVENING CLASSES
The local committee for evening classes have again arranged a comprehensive
curriculum of subjects for evening classes, which include woodwork, English,
commercial arithmetic, shorthand, book-keeping, elementary business practice,
building construction and household cookery. The instructors will be respectively Mr.
Heath, Miss Cole, Mr. E.E. Browne, Mr. H.M. Leurs and Miss Whitmarsh. Mr. E.E.
Brown, Wokingham Council School, is the superintendent.
CONSERVATIVE OPEN-AIR MEETING
Under the auspices of the Wokingham Conservative and Unionist Association a
well-attended and successful open-air meeting was held in the Market Place on
Tuesday evening. Mr. C. Mansfield was in the chair and the speaker was Mr. B.
Billcliffe, whose address was received with much interest by the large assembly. On
the “platform” was also Mrs. Watts (local hon. secretary). The chairman introduced
the speaker who gave a resumé of the coal situation based upon the report of the
Royal Commission, a copy of which he produced, and from which he quoted. The
questions which were put to him and the occasional heckling to which he was
subjected showed a real interest in the subject.
