EMBROOK CLUB OPENED
                      The opening ceremony of the new Social Club at Embrook was performed by the
                   Mayor. There was a crowded audience. Mr. E.B. Skinner is the first president of the
                   club, Councillor F.J. Barrett chairman of the committee, and Mr. P.F. Butler secretary.
                   Many well-known public men were present and apologies for absence were read from
                   many others. The Mayor referred to the inception and carrying through of the scheme,
                   which included the adaptation of the old Mission Room into suitable club premises by
                   voluntary workers. Councillor Barrett expressed satisfaction at the large attendance,
                   and thanked especially the rector and churchwardens of St. Paul’s for handing over
                   the Mission Room on a 21 year’s lease of 25s a year. A concert was sustained by Mrs.
                   J.W. Strange. Miss D. Fidler, Mr. D. Goddard, Mr. “Curly” Thatcher (songs), Mr. A.
                   Andrews,  jun.  (xylophone  solos).  Miss  Webb  and  Mr.  Andrews  jun.,  acted  as
                   accompanists. A retiring collection realised £1 16s. for the repair fund.

                                              THE ELECTRIC THEATRE
                      At the beginning of next week John Barrymore is appearing with Helen Twelvetrees
                   and  William  Boyd  in  “Cardigan’s  Last  Case”.  There  will  be  no  performance  on
                   Friday, but for Thursday and Saturday Boris Karloff and Charles Laughton appear in
                   a thriller entitled “The Old Dark House”. The management are offering a reward to
                   any lady who will see the picture alone at midnight.

                                               DEATH OF MISS L. CLAY
                      The funeral of Miss Louisa Clay who passed away on Friday last week took place at
                   St.  Paul’s  Church,  Wokingham,  on  Monday.  The  Rev.  T.W.  Sergeant  officiated.
                   Owing to deceased weighing some 38 stone, it was necessary to rig a derrick over the
                   grave in order that the coffin could be lowered. Messrs Heelas and Sons, Wokingham,
                   represented by Mr. D.H. Dowty, were the undertakers.

                                           WOKINGHAM TOWN COUNCIL
                      The Mayor announced that Mr. Arthur Heelas had presented to the council to keep
                   with their records, a book—“The History of the Crutwell Family.” The family had
                   many associations with Wokingham dating back over two centuries. Mr. Heelas had
                   also given them a copy of “The Windsor Forest Turnpike”.  It was decided to send the
                   donor an official letter of thanks.

                                             CANON LONG’S FAREWELL
                      Following upon a farewell letter in the Parish Magazine for September, Cabon B.
                   Long  on  Sunday  preached  both  morning  and  evening  and  took  leave  of  the
                   congregation  of  All  Saints’,  to  whom  he  had  faithfully  ministered  for  the  past  29
                   years. He referred to their long and happy association, thanked the parishioners for
                   their loyal co-operation and expressed his best wishes for the future of the church. On
                   Thursday next Canon Long’s institution and induction to the benefice of Whitchurch
                   is  to  take  place,  and  he  and  Mrs.  Long  have  said  they  would  be  pleased  to  see  at
                   Whitchurch Rectory those friends from Wokingham who might be able to come over.
                   The Rev. Mr. Goldthorpe, of “Grendahr,” London Road, Wokingham, has undertaken
                   for three months the pastoral charge of the parish.
