WAR WEAPONS WEEK
In connection with Wokingham’s War Weapons Week, a grand parade has been
rd
arranged to take place on Sunday, March 23 , commencing at 2p.m. Amongst those
taking part will be Army and Air Force units, bands, Civil defence units, Home
Guard.
Fifteen local shops have agreed to loan their windows for some exceptionally good
exhibits during the week. Special competitions are to be arranged for school children
in the borough and rural district. Savings Certificates given by Ald. Barrett and Mr.
E.E. Summers will be the prizes.
Two whist drives, arranged by Mrs. Townsend, are to be held in the Town Hall on

Wednesday, March 26 . Some of the surrounding villages are making arrangements
to hold whist drives. The indicator on the Town Hall will show daily the exact amount
invested. A War Weapons film will be shown at the Ritz Cinema.
The Mayor is to give a Savings Certificate to every baby born in the borough during
the week, and Ald. G. Ford, chairman R.D.C., will deposit ten shillings in the Post
Office Savings Bank for every baby born in the rural district that week.

The Military Band and Drums will beat “Retreat” in Broad Street, Wokingham,
opposite Montague House, on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
W.E.A.
Mr. W.J. Souch, B.Sc., F.R.G.S. gave the last of his series of lectures on Monday,
the subject being “The First English Colonies.”
BIBLE SOCIETY
In connection with the British and Foreign Bible Society the annual meeting of the
Wokingham branch was held in All Saints Church, when the address was given by the
Right Rev. Bishop Wright.
DIED THROUGH ENEMY ACTION
The death has occurred of W.J. Gale through enemy action. He was the second son
of Mrs. Gale and the late Mr. W.J. Gale, of Heatherside, Sandhurst Road,
Wokingham. He went to Newmarket 22 years ago with Bert Lines, and was familiarly
known on the turf as Sloper.
THE LATE MR. E. HOBBS
Mr. Edward Hobbs, of The Lodge, Holme Grange, Wokingham, who has died, was
for many years in the employ of the Hon. Mrs. Weston as butler. The funeral took
place at All Saints’, the rector officiating. The mourners were: The widow, Mrs
