Today, May 15 , is the first day of Wokingham and district’s Wings for Victory
Week, the biggest local savings effort ever. If the half million aim is reached the

                      Three years ago—on May 14 , 1940—Mr. Anthony Eden made a dramatic
announcement over the radio. The Local Defence Volunteers was to be started. That
night many thousands of Britons queued outside police stations and gave their names,
ready to fight—with pikes if necessary.
Now the Home Guard (as it was re-named) is a modern well-equipped Army. To
celebrate the third birthday, Wokingham Home Guards have organised a miniature
tattoo. It is to be held on Thursday in the field (entrance Broad Street) belonging to
the Misses Ellison. The public are cordially invited to come and see how the local
Home Guard are prepared to defend their homes should the occasion arise. Display
includes tank busting, battle squad drill, field craft, mortar and machine gun drill, etc.
