district will be allocated ten Sunderland flying boats, the eyes of the Navy, whose
duties include spying out U-boats and destroying them. Details of the Wokingham
programme for the week have previously appeared (some of the village activities are
published this week; others were printed last week). The opening ceremony will be in
the Market Place at 3 p.m. today, as gliders, towed by aeroplanes, fly overhead.
TATTOO COMES TO TOWN
th
Three years ago—on May 14 , 1940—Mr. Anthony Eden made a dramatic
announcement over the radio. The Local Defence Volunteers was to be started. That
night many thousands of Britons queued outside police stations and gave their names,
ready to fight—with pikes if necessary.
Now the Home Guard (as it was re-named) is a modern well-equipped Army. To
celebrate the third birthday, Wokingham Home Guards have organised a miniature
tattoo. It is to be held on Thursday in the field (entrance Broad Street) belonging to
the Misses Ellison. The public are cordially invited to come and see how the local
Home Guard are prepared to defend their homes should the occasion arise. Display
includes tank busting, battle squad drill, field craft, mortar and machine gun drill, etc.
