G.T.C. ENTERTAIN AT WOKINGHAM
Gaily attired in party dresses the lasses of the Wokingham Company of the Girls’
Training Corp were the hostesses to their girl and boy friends of the Air Training
Corp, and a few American soldiers, at the Town Hall on Tuesday.
The hall was attractively decorated for the occasion by Mr. C.A. Nibbs, assisted by
Mr. Wright, and the evening was voted on all sides, as being a very successful one.
Among those present were the Chairman of the G.T.C., (the Hon. Mrs. Corfield) and
Miss Corfield.
Games and dancing were enthusiastically indulged in capably directed by Junior
Commandant Henderson, and assistant Officer Robinson.
During the evening a competition for a doll dressed as a W.R.E.N. was run by
A.S.L. Tarry, and was won by Mrs. H. Cottrell. The proceeds of this additional
attraction to the programme realised £2 7s. 6d, which goes to the Red Cross Prisoner
of War Fund.
Before the party came to an end, the opportunity was taken by junior Commandant
Henderson, to express a vote of thanks to Mr. Nibbs for his unfailing assistance to the
G.T.C. not only on this occasion but during the past meetings of the company at the
Town Hall, sentiments which were heartily endorsed by the assembly.
D.F.C. AWARDED TO ACT. FLT. LIEUT O. H. LUSH
Good News for Councillor and Mrs. H. Lush, of Wokingham
It has officially reported that the Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded to
Act. Ft/Lieut. O. H. Lush R.A.F.V.R., only son of Councillor and Mrs. Lush of
Wellington Road, Wokingham.
This news, which was conveyed to Mrs. Lush by The Times and Weekly News
yesterday (Thursday) was the first intimation that her son had received this coveted
award.
Flight Lieut. Lush joined the R.A.F. in April 1941, and after serving in the ranks,
was commissioned in 1942.
He was educated at Grosvenor School, Wokingham, and Caterham (Surrey) School,
under the fine headmastership of Alan Mottram, and after completing his education,
was apprenticed to the County Surveyor at Winchester. Prior to the outbreak of war,
he was engaged in the capacity of Civil Engineer to the Berkshire County Council.
In the words of the citation announcing the award it is stated that on many occasions
it has been entirely due to the excellence of this officer’s navigational skill that his
captain has been able to find, and bomb enemy targets in adverse weather conditions.
Sqdn. Navigational Officer Flt/Lieut. Lush has performed his duties with
remarkable keenness, and as a result, an exceptional high standard of navigation has
been maintained in the squadron.
