GARDEN PARTY
                      Organised by the Wokingham Women’s Meeting over one hundred people attended
                   a garden meeting and sale held on Wednesday at Devonia, Langborough Road, the
                   home  of  one  of  the  members,  Mrs.  W.P.  Tucker.  There  were  various  stalls  and
                   competitions and tea was served.  The meeting was opened by Mrs. B.J. Harris, Ald.
                   E.W. Reeves presiding. Proceeds exceeding £30 will go to Women’s Meeting funds.
                   The Mayor and Mayoress were among those present.

                                                      Off to Canada
                                 MR. and MRS. S.A. PITHER LEAVING WOKINGHAM
                      Mr. and Mrs. S.A. Pither, of 37, Emmbrook Road, Wokingham, are looking forward
                   to  joining their  married  daughter,  Mrs.  W.A.  Kitching,  in  Montreal,  Canada,  soon.
                   They hope sail about the 24th of this month.
                      Mr.  Pither,  who  was  born  at  Swallowfield  in  1881,  has  lived  in  Wokingham
                   practically all his life. He carried on business as a master butcher under the title, S.A.
                   Pither Ltd., in Broad Street, for 13 years, retiring about seven years ago. His wife,
                   who was Miss Lilly Over when he married her in 1911, belongs to a very old and
                   well-known Crowthorne family.
                      When the 1914-18 war broke out, Mr. Pither came back from Australia to rejoin his
                   old  regiment,  the  Berkshire  Yeomanry  with  which  he  served  in  that  campaign.  He
                   joined the Special Police afterwards, and became District Officer, finishing with that
                   rank this year. He had also been in the Hampshire Volunteers and was a member of
                   the Wokingham Fire Brigade from 1909 to 1911.
                      For 13 years Mr. Pither was a member of the executive of the Wokingham Club,
                   and was its Chairman in 1945 and 1946, when he retired. The daughter, Barbara, was
                   married  to  Capt.  W.A.  Kitching,  of  the  Royal  Canadian  Corps  of  Signals—Loyal
                   Edmonton Regt.
                      Mr. Pither leaves behind him his best wishes to all his comrades and Mrs. Pither
                   joins in thanking the host of friends they have made locally for their many kindnesses

                                            TAXI-RIDE FOR OLD PEOPLE
                      Wokingham Hire Car proprietors banded together on Monday to give 73 old people,
                   whose average age was 79, a three-hour drive. They were given tea at California-in-
                   England.  The  party  as  accompanied  by  the  Mayor  (Cllr.  N.C.  Lawrence),  and
                   arrangements  for  the  outing  were  made  by  The  Deputy-Mayor  (Ald.  D.  Goddard)
                   assisted by Miss Goddard.

                                                  DANCE FESTIVAL
                       Gaily clad in national costumes, members of the Berkshire Association of Girls’
                   Clubs and Mixed Clubs took part in a dance festival, held in the grounds of the Holt
                   School, Wokingham, on Wednesday. The festival, one of several being presented in
                   various  parts  of  the  county,  was  arranged  in  co-operation  with  the  Berkshire
                   Education  Committee.  Dances  from  many  counties  were  performed,  some  of  them
                   community dances, in which the audience were invited to join.
