The new fire siren mounted on a pole adjacent to the Methodist Church in Rose
Street, Wokingham, came into operation yesterday (Friday) after tests. Now
emergency fire calls are sent direct to Reading, and the Wokingham siren is sounded
by remote control. It is expected that the new procedure will be faster and more
efficient.

A VETERAN SUNDAY SCHOOL
th
Wokingham Baptist Church Sunday School celebrated its 150 anniversary during
the weekend. On Saturday evening there was a social evening, which was also a re-
union of many former teachers and pupils, and messages of goodwill were received
from three former ministers of the church. On Sunday the services began with a
meeting for prayer, conducted by the minister, the Rev. H.M. Ray Smith, and morning
and evening services were led by Miss Doris Street, a well-known lecturer in Sunday
School methods. The present children of the Sunday School took part in these services
by singing, and reciting extracts from the Scriptures. During the afternoon children
from all departments of the school united in presenting a play, “Over The Hills To
Nazareth,” in the church and Miss Street told the story to the smaller children. The
Methodist Sunday School was invited to this special service. Between the afternoon
and evening services, tea was served in the schoolroom, and a large birthday cake was
cut by Mrs. F. Hall, who has the unique record of having taught in the school for over
60 years. Among the guests were three former superintendents, Mr. H.R. Griffith, Mr.
H. L. Perkins and Mr. G.W. Peryer, together with Mr. A. Andrews, who was
superintendent of the morning school from 1936 to 1941.
