STRONG ROOM COMMITTEE

A meeting was held on the 16 of March when the account for fitting up the room
including the cost of the door was approved and recommended for payment. The
specifications of further work of painting, papering & c. in connection with the room
were read and tenders opened. It was agreed to recommend that the tender of Mr.
Dearlove for £15.15s. be accepted.

SATURDAY NIGHT ENTERTAINMENTS
Councillor Seaward’s efforts have again been much appreciated for arranging these
popular entertainments during the past winter. The last and a very successful
entertainment was given in the Town Hall on Saturday evening, the usual friends
contributing to the programme.

DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS
To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee the members of the volunteer fire brigade have
arranged to roast an ox generously presented by the captain of the brigade (Counc
Ifould) in the Market-place on Jubilee Day – the meat afterwards to be distributed to
the needy inhabitants of Wokingham. The brigade are appealing to the public for
subscriptions and help in order to extend the scheme.

ODD FELLOWS FETE
On Bank Holiday the Wokingham Lodge of Odd Fellows held their annual fete in a
meadow in the Easthampstead-road, lent by Messrs. Lush. The Wokingham Town
Band headed a procession of the members with their banners through the streets of the
town. Sports were provided, prizes being given by tradesmen of the town. Various
competitions of singing, dancing &c., were held. There was a large attendance of
visitors, and plenty of amusement was provided
ALL SAINTS’ BAND
This band, by permission of Commander and Mrs. Gregorie, gave a promenade
concert and dance at Highfield on Monday evening.
STORMY WEATHER
In tropical weather thunder was heard in Wokingham district on Thursday. At 1.45
p.m. the lightning struck a new chimney stack at Johnson’s Farm, King Street,
adjoining the Reading-road. A hole was made in the chimney pot and the electric
current then split the stack from top to base and dislodged some tiles. The house has
lately undergone considerable repair. Some workmen employed on the building were
lying down close to the struck building, but no one was hurt.
