                                            WESLEYAN ENTERTAINMENT
                      With  the  object  of  reducing  a  debt  of  £190  on  the  renovation  and  new  organ
                   (balance)  fund  an  entertainment  was  given  in  the  Wesleyan  Schoolroom  on
                   Wednesday  evening.  Mr. W.G. Jeffries presided, and there was  a large attendance.
                   The  programme  was  arranged  by  Mr.  F.  Burland  and  the  Chairman.  Refreshments
                   were provided, and the proceeds of a silver collection were devoted to the debt fund.

                                                 TOWN BAND DANCE
                      The Town Band held their annual dance on Wednesday evening in the Town Hall.
                   The Band, conducted by Mr. F. Farr, played a good selection of dance music. Mr. A.
                   Bird made an efficient secretary.

                                              MAGPIES CRICKET CLUB
                      The annual general meeting of this cricket club was held on Saturday evening, at the
                   Bank  room,  Town  Hall.  There  was  a  good  attendance  of  members,  and  Mr.  S.A.
                   Griffin was voted to the chair.  The report presented by Mr. A.H. Jones showed a very
                   successful season. A balance in hand was reported of £1 12s. 2d., and the report and
                   balance-sheet were adopted. The Rev. B. Long was re-elected president, and Mr. A.H.
                   Jones was re-elected hon. secretary. The Club again decided to enter its teams for the
                   Reading and District Cricket League in Divisions I and II respectively. Practice nights
                   were fixed for Tuesdays and Thursdays during the season. Votes of thanks concluded
                   the meeting.
                                                 WOKINGHAM CLUB
                      The annual meeting of this club was held in the Club House, Denmark-street, on
                   Friday evening in last week, under the presidency of Mr. W. Howard Palmer. A large
                   number of members were present, and the Secretary’s accounts showed a balance in
                   hand of about £25. The officers were re-elected, Mr. A.H. Jones taking Mr. Craig’s
                   place on the committee. The W. Howard Palmer Cup was presented in replica to Mr.
                   A.H.  Jones,  who  suitably  acknowledged  the  gift.  Mr.  Cook  was  the  recipient  of  a
                   silver-mounted pipe, tobacco, and pouch, for the interest he had taken in the billiard
                   room. Hearty votes of thanks concluded the meeting.

                                                  SOCIAL MEETING
                      An enjoyable “social” was held in St. Paul’s Parish Room on Wednesday, arranged
                   by the following committee-  Mrs. Targett, Mrs  Laumann, Misses  Walden, Howard
                   and Goddard. The proceedings included a whist drive, the ladies first prize being won
                   by  Miss  Webb  (Hurst)  and  the  gentlemen’s  first  prize  by  Mr.  R.  Sergeant.
                   Refreshments were provided and dancing followed till 2 a.m.

                                      DEATH OF MR. WALTER OF BEAR WOOD
                      With very sincere regret we have to announce that Berkshire has this week lost yet
                   another of its well-known and representative men, who was also one of the largest
                   land-owners. After but a few days’ illness, Mr. Arthur Fraser Walter expired on the
                   evening of Tuesday last at his stately residence, Bear Wood, near Wokingham. The
                   tidings of his death has called forth a deep feeling of sorrow as well as sympathy with
                   his  widow  and  family;  and  a  keen  sense  of  loss  is  felt  throughout  the  county,
                   especially in his own neighbourhood. Less than three weeks ago Mr. Walter was taken
                   ill  with  an  attack  of  influenza  but  he  apparently  did  not  realise  the  gravity  of  the
