                      The services at the places of worship were well attended. The anthem at All Saints’
                   was  “The  Hallelujah  Chorus,”  and  at  St.  Paul’s  “The  have  taken  away  my  Lord”
                   (Stainer).
                                       GARDEN LECTURE BY MR. E.R. JANES
                      Mr.  E.R.  Janes,  F.R.H.S.,  of  University  College,  Reading,  gave,  on  Wednesday
                                                   th
                   evening in the Town Hall, his 5  lecture on vegetable cultivation in war-time, and
                   dealt with sowing early dwarf beans and running beans in boxes, globe beet, carrots,
                   and successional peas, planting main crop potatoes, and methods of supporting runner
                   beans. The Mayor presided.

                                            TEA TO WOUNDED SOLDIERS
                      In connection with the Wokingham Women’s Meeting a tea and social was given in
                   the  schoolroom  of  the  Wesleyan  Church  Wednesday  to  50  wounded  Canadian
                   Soldiers from Bear Wood Hospital. A gramophone kindly lent by Mr. Councillor W.
                   Bodle,  greatly  added  to  the  pleasure  of  the  tea.  Councillor  extended  a  very  hearty
                   welcome  to  the  soldiers  and  expressed  the  warm  appreciation  at  the  way  they  had
                   come  from  over  the  seas  in  response  to  the  country’s  call.  The  programme  was
                   sustained by Mrs. Davies, Mrs. Anderson, Miss  D. Sale, Miss E. Yalden, Miss M.
                   Boshier,  Miss  M.  Webb,  Mr.  T.M.  Welch,  Mr.  W.  G.  Jeffries,  Mr.  J.  Baverstock,
                   Trooper Curle and Pastor W.D. Elphick.
                      During the interval refreshments and cigarettes were supplied to the soldiers. At the
                   close the President of the Women’s Meeting, Mrs. Bennett, said they appreciated all
                   the soldiers were doing  for them and proposed a very hearty vote of thanks to the
                   Chairman  and  all  who  had  helped.  She  also  read  some  lines  composed  for  the
                   occasion by the wife of Councillor Bodle. Two of the soldiers responded.

                                         THE NATIONAL EGG COLLECTION
                      In connection with the Wokingham and District Depot, 108 dozen eggs were sent to
                   the Central Depot of the base hospitals this week. Contributions were received from
                   the following most of whom are regular weekly contributors:- St. Paul’s Church: Miss
                   Annesley, Mrs. Bailey, the Misses  Cobham,  Mr. C.  Bowyer, Mr. C. Bowyer (who
                   collected £2 0s. 8d. in money) the Misses Campbell, Mrs. Coston, Lady Cunningham,
                   Miss Ellison, Mrs. Paley, the Misses Simonds, the Misses Tatham, Mr. Tebbitt, Mrs.
                   F. A. Simonds, Mrs. Cornish, Mrs Mansfield, Captain W. Godsal, Mrs Edlmann, Mrs.
                   Hobbs,  Mrs  C.  Hobbs,  Mrs.  Farrington-Evans,  Mr.  Parsons,  Mrs.  F.  Heelas,  Miss
                   Philbrick, Mrs. Monkton-Brown, Miss Deane, Mr. Vlasto, Mrs. Whitaker, Mrs West,
                   Mrs. Vere Allfrey, and others.
                      In addition to these 34 eggs were received from the Binfield Churches, 135 from
                   Hurst  Church  and  19  from  Hurst  School  children.  Barkham  sent  50  eggs  from  the
                   Sunday  School  Children,  who,  instead  of  buying  sweets  during  Lent  saved  their
                   pennies for this purpose. Mr. Barker, the Binfield carrier continues to give his services
                   free. Mrs. Terence Dunne is the controller.

                   N.B. Dr. T B Bokenham was sidesman at St. Paul’s Church.

                   the death of Rev J Stratton.
