Miss Perk then presented the Mayoress with a beautiful circular mirror, with
porcelain floral frame, remarking: “The ladies of the committee present the Mayoress
with a memento of the opening of the green.”
The Mayor then sent down the first wood after which the game v. Berks County
Bowling Association proceeded.

Queen Mary’s Delightful Gift
SUCCESSFUL FETE
Varied “Lots” From Notable Donors Auctioned
The annual parochial church fete of All Saints’ (Rev. Canon Long, Rural Dean and
Rector), under the title of “Fancy Fayre and Fete,” was held on Wednesday on the
lawn and in the meadow of “High Close” Wiltshire Road, by kind permission of the
Hon. Mrs. Corfield, O.B.E. The fete was arranged by the Parochial Church Council
and proceeds are to be devoted to parish funds. Mr. T.W. Park is the council and fete
hon. secretary.
There was a sale of various articles that had been given. Mrs. Corfield had taken the
greatest interest in obtaining gifts from leading people and had been eminently
successful.
H.M. the queen graciously sent a gift, which was accompanied by the following
letter:-

Dear Mrs Corfield,-Many thanks for your letter and the Queen commands me to

send you at once this little lace cover as a gift for the bazaar on July 22 for All
Saints’ Church, Wokingham.
Her Majesty hopes you will be able to sell it.

QUEEN’S GIFT AUCTIONED
At 3.30 p.m., the auction at the various articles of interest was carried out on the
lawn by Mr. Harold Watts, bidding being brisk. The Rector (Canon Long) introduced
(and thanked) Mr. Watts.
The drawn thread lawn and lace cover, sent by H.M. the Queen, and accompanying
letter were first put up to “shilling bids, all paid in,” which realised £2 1s. 0d. Then,
put up for actual auction, it was secured by Miss E.M. Greenside at £5, that lady
promptly handed it back to Mr. Watts for re-auction, when, after spirited bidding, the
Hon. Mrs. Corfield secured it for £5, thus the total realised by Her Majesty’s gracious
gift was £12 1s. 0d.
A play bill, (date 1840) of a London Opera, printed on silk, and book of words,
German and English, surmounted by crown; book reputed to have been used by H.M.
Queen Victoria at a performance of “Don Juan” by German Artistes was knocked
down to Supt. Goddard for 12s.
A delightful picture of a garden scene, worked in silk by the Hon. Mrs. Corfield,
was secured for 18s. by Mrs. F.E. Chapman.
Framed signed photographs of the Archbishop of Canterbury and of the Rt. Hon.
Stanley Baldwin sold well.
