The Mayoress of Wokingham (Mrs. F.J. Barrett) is the first to wear the chain of
office which was presented at Thursday evening’s meeting of Wokingham Town
Council by Councillor Miss Dorothy Wescott.
The Mayor (Ald. F.J. Barrett) said that this year a national event of great
importance, the Coronation, was taking place. Fifty years ago Wokingham, with the
rest of the country, was celebrating the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria. At that time
there was no chain of office, and the then Mayor (Ald. T.M. Wescott), to remember
the year, had a medallion made. In December last Councillor Miss Wescott expressed
the wish that she would like to present the medallion to the borough, and it was
thought that it would be a good emblem to be worn by the Mayoress of Wokingham.
Miss Wescott offered to give a chain. The hard work of Miss Wescott on the council
was well known. She was blessed with a large amount of public spirit, and in giving
that chain and medallion she was showing that spirit to the full.
