ALARMING EXPERIENCE OF WELL-KNOWN TEACHER
At 10.10 p.m. on Friday last week, during a heavy thunderstorm, an alarming
experience was shared by residents of Oxford Road. No. 93, occupied by Miss Cole, a
member of the teaching staff of Wescott Road School, and her sister, received the full
force of the electric current, which literally split the chimney stack in twain sending
showers of bricks flying. Between one and two hundred tiles were displaced from the
roof, and the grate in one of the upper rooms was hurled into the room. A mantel
clock was turned face upwards without further displacement. Beyond shock, the
residents escaped unhurt. Mr. Green, a near neighbour, handling his bicycle at the
time of the flash, received a severe shock, which prevented him from going as he
intended to the R.M.N.S. at Bear Wood as usual.
PRESENTATION TO EX-SUPT. BUTLER
At a parade of the Wokingham Police Division, at Wokingham, on Wednesday, Ex-
Supt. Butler was presented with a chiming oak grandmother clock, subscribed for by
the officers and men of the Wokingham Division. Inspector Bennett, the senior
inspector, in making the presentation, spoke in high praise of Supt. Butler, who, he
said, had always been most helpful to everyone, always ready to advise, and never lost
his temper. The hoped Mr. Butler would be spared many years to hear the clock
chime, and enjoy good health and the rest he had earned. They were all gratified to
know that he was restored to health after his serious illness. Ex-Supt. Butler, in reply,
thanked the officers and men for their gift. He said he was proud to have been their
superintendent, and at the same time to have gained their esteem. He was glad to be
with them once again, and wished them all good luck in their future police careers.
