Whose bright blue doors ‘twere sacrilege to slam,
An inn with courtyard full of corners quaint
                                        --That’s Wokingham!
A little town with church on either end,
A stream where once (‘tis said) the crayfish swam,
And narrow streets, that twist and dodge and bend,
                                        --That’s Wokingham!

And if, bewildered by life’s rush, my mind
With pleasant, peaceful thoughts I’d crowd and cram,
Such peace, such pleasantness, such thoughts, I’d find,
                                        --At Wokingham!
                                                      S. E. Collins.

                                               LABOUR PARTY SOCIAL
The local Labour Party held a social at the British Legion Hall on Saturday. Mr.
Gibson was M.C., Mrs. Bird (Bracknell), Mr. Wilkinson (Hurst), and Mrs. Mattingley
and Mr. F. Graves contributed to the programme. There were various competitions,
and the ladies’ committee (Mrs. J. Gibson, Mrs. Douglas, Mrs. Graves, Mrs. Smith
and Miss Trowbridge) supervised the catering.

                                                    COTTAGE FIRE
At 3.45 p.m. on Saturday Wokingham Fire Brigade received a call to three cottages
at Forest Road, near the school. On arrival they found the roof of the centre cottage
was alight, due probably to overheating from the chimney. The brigade, under Second
Officer E. Hawkins, were able to prevent what might have been a serious outbreak,
and after two hours were able to leave. The cottages belong to Mr. R.H.R. Palmer.
The large fire escape ladder of the new engine proved most useful as it stretched in a
long span from the road to the top of the affected roof, enabling the firemen to deal at
once with the outbreak at its source.
