TALK OF SOUTH AFRICA
At the branch meeting of the British Legion (women’s section) on Wednesday, Mrs.
P.G. Murrey (chairman) presided, and was supported by Mrs. Edgar Earnbart (hon.
secretary) and the speaker (Miss M. Fedden). The chairman referred to the
satisfactory progress of the branch, and noted the value of honorary members, who in
th
the branch, did a great deal of good. The Purse Fund, in preparation for April 27 ,
was growing towards the £5 required, it was revealed. Miss Fedden lectured on “My
travels in South Africa.” A vote of thanks to the speaker was proposed by Miss
Young, and carried with acclamation. Prior to the usual tea being served, Mrs.
th
Petersen (28 Berks V.A.D.) gave a talk on air raid precautions, with reference to the
Mayor’s circular letter.
THE RITZ
“Exclusive,” featuring Charles Ruggles and Lloyd Nolan, is showing today
(Saturday). The supporting film is “Circus Girl,” a drama of the “Big Top,” starring
Bob Livingstone and June Travis. On Monday, the spectacular musical film, “Let’s
Make a Night of It,” is being screened. Buddy Rogers, June Clyde, Fred Emery and
Iris Hoey are the leading players, whilst in addition, there are Claire Luce, Brian
Michie, Afrique, Dan Donovan, and a host of screen and radio stars. Irene Dunne and
Randolph Scott head the cast in “High, Wide and Handsome,” which is the chief film
showing at the latter part of the week. It is a spectacular melodrama with, music, and
the story concerns the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania. Also in the cast are such
favourites as Dorothy Lamour and Charles Bickford.
WOKINGHAM AND AIR RAID PRECAUTIONS
Wokingham is going right ahead with the scheme for air raid precautions and every
householder has received the Mayor’s letter and enrolment form.
The Mayor has been anxious to impress upon everyone that it is far better to
complete the form and not be required than to fail to send in the form and find that
they were wanted. Everyone is urged to offer their services as the number and kind of
volunteers is bound to vary and increase as time goes on and the record of volunteers
will be a most valuable start.
Every volunteer will be invited to attend a meeting within a few days of the
completion of the lists and the County Officer (Major Paget) will attend. This meeting
will be called to give fullest information to everybody and enable every volunteer to
ask questions.
The various classes will be formed at once and arrangements are now well in hand
to ensure that instruction is given and the requirements of each section are met. The
scheme will then be well in hand and will be completed with the least possible delay
in such a way that Wokingham will be in possession of an organisation of which she
will be very proud and feel far more secure should the occasion arise to put these
measures into operation. In addition to the instruction every volunteer accepted will
have a booklet clearly defining his or her work.
