FILM STARS AT GARDEN PARTY
Charity Event At Wokingham
ATTENDANCE SETS A NEW RECORD
There was a record attendance at Saturday’s annual garden party arranged by the
Council of the Cinematic Trade Benevolent Fund, and held at “Glebelands,”
Wokingham, which is the convalescent and rest home of the fund. Among those who
patronised the garden party were: Sir William Jury (president of the fund), Lieut.-Col.
A.C. Bromhead (trustee), Mr. Reginald C. Bromhead (chairman), Mr. R.C.O. Viveash
(secretary), the Mayor and Mayoress of Wokingham (Cllr. and Mrs. J. Egerton
Thorpe), and the following film stars: Mr. Naunton Wayne, Miss Linden Travers, Mr.
Moore Marriott. Mr. Graham Moffat, Mr. Wally Patch, Mr. Frank Formby (a brother
of Mr. George Formby), Mr. Gibb McLaughlin and Mr. Basil Radford. Mr. Moffatt
and Mr. Marriott superintended a darts-throwing side show. Needless to say,
autograph hunters reaped a harvest, and signed portraits of the stars were sold very
quickly. About a thousand attended the party to join in the festivities and to try their
luck at the various side shows, which were supervised by members of all branches of
the film industry: the clerical staff, technicians from the studios and heads of
departments in Wardour Street. They were able to inspect “Glebelands” and its
delightful surroundings, which has received a record number of convalescent and
permanent guests during the past year.
In the afternoon there was a long programme of sports, in which members of the
staffs of film companies took part. The prizes for the events were distributed by Miss
Linden Travers. The prize winners were introduced by Mr. Naunton Wayne. Two of
the afternoon’s events were filmed.

The gardens of “The Elms,” Broad Street, Wokingham, were placed at the disposal
of the St. Paul’s Fete Committee on Wednesday, by permission of the Misses Ellison.

The opening ceremony was presided over by the Rector, the Rev. P.J.H. Scott, who
thanked the Misses Ellison for the loan of their garden; also the stall-holders and
workers for their efforts; and those who had come from outside the parish to assist. He
further thanked the chairman of the fete committee, Mr. W.J. Willey, and Mr. A.
