LEGION WOMEN’S SALE
The total raised by the recent sale at Clarecourt in connection with the Wokingham
British Legion (women’s section) was £13 10s.
HELPING ST. DUNSTAN’S
The envelope collection in Wokingham and district has resulted in the total of £57
4s. 9d. being sent to St. Dunstan’s War Fund. It was organised by Mrs. W.P. Tucker.
CONCERT
A successful concert was given entirely by eleven evacuated and Forest Road school
children on Thursday last week in Forest Road schools, which was tastefully
decorated by the children with roses from Mr. and Mrs. R. Hopkin’s garden. During
the interval, Miss Loutham (head mistress) was presented with a bouquet of flowers.
The collection totalled £3 6s. 9d. Afterwards Mrs. Hopkins was presented with a
bunch of roses and lavender, and the money for the Forest Road Wool Fund, for her
Wednesday afternoon work party to knit comforts for the troops.
SOLDIER THANKS BABIES
The babies who were the principals in a baby show at Wokingham recently, when
£22 was raised for comforts for local men returned from Dunkirk, were among those
thanked by one of the soldiers who received a parcel as a result of the show. He writes
to Miss Benson, the principal organiser:- “I wish to express my thanks for the parcel
received. I feel that I cannot thank you and the organisers, also the babies and
mothers, for these, their gifts, enough. I only hope that I may do my part as well and
as willingly as you all hope.
A soldier from Dunkirk.”
MAYOR APPEALS FOR MORE L.D.V.’S
The Mayor of Wokingham (Cllr. E.W. Reeves) writes:-
“I would like to make an urgent appeal to our local residents who are eligible at
once to join the very important organisation, the L.D.V. I do most sincerely thank all
those who responded to the appeal and fully appreciate the most valuable work they
are doing. More men are urgently needed, in fact more than double the present
strength, so that our town may be adequately protected.
Men from 17 years of age up to the present calling-up age, and men over calling-up
age up to 65 years of age are most urgently needed. I need hardly point out the need,
firstly, of guarding your own homes and town, and secondly, the value to the National
effort, if we can properly man and guard this portion of the country entrusted to our
care. Remember the more men we have the easier will be the work. Applicants should
register at the Police Station between the hours of 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. and I hope a good
response will be made to this most important appeal.
