                                           FESTIVAL OF BRITAIN SERVICE
                      Representatives  from  the  various  Wokingham  churches  gathered  in  the  Market
                   Place  on  Sunday  for  an    open-air  Festival  service,  which  was  conducted  by  the
                   Mayor’s  chaplain  (the  Rev.  F.A.  Steer)  assisted  by  the  Rev.  R.J  Siderfin,  and  the
                   address was given by the Methodist minister, the Rev. C.B. Penrose. The psalm was
                   read by the rector of St. Paul’s Church (the Ven. Archdeacon Thorndike-Shaw). The
                   Mayor (Cllr. S.L. Bowyer) and members of the council attended.
                      Music for hymns was played by St. Sebastian’s Band.

                                          ROTARIANS RECEIVE CHARTER
                      The  Rotary  Club  of  Wokingham  received  their  charter  at  the  Town  Hall  on
                   Wednesday, the presentation being made by Rotarian H .J. Bowyer (Slough), who is
                   Rotary international representative and chairman of No. IX District. Representatives
                   of more than a score of clubs from four or five counties answered the roll-call at the
                   dinner and representatives were present from clubs in Districts No. 13 and No. 14.
                   After Past President Colonel L.T. Goodenough, of Reading, the sponsors of the new
                   club, had spoken, the district chairman (Rotarian Bowyer) conveyed greetings from
                   all clubs of Rotary International British Isles, and from 6,500 clubs spread throughout
                   80 countries of the world.
                      After presentation of the charter, Captain Ernest E. Goss (president of the Reading
                   Club) handed to the founder-president of the Wokingham Club (Rotarian F.J. Barrett)
                   a ship’s bell bearing the Rotary badge for use at club meetings. The bell was the gift
                   of  the  Reading  club.  Rotarian,  E.A.  Hoskins  (founder-member  of  the  Wokingham
                   Club)  presented  a  president’s  jewel  which  had  belonged  to  his  father,  and  Past
                   President  H.G.  Markham  (Reading)  presented  a  visitors’  book,  on  behalf  of  three
                   Reading  members  who  assisted  in  the  formation  of  the  club--Past  Presidents  L.T.
                   Goodenough, W.G. Warwick and himself. President Barrett asked his club to accept a
                   reading desk, which he himself had partially made.
                      On Sunday afternoon a dedication service is to be held at Finchampstead Church, to
                   be conducted by the rector (Rotarian the Rev. R.D. Weller.

                                                   FOOTBALL CLUB
                      Wokingham Town Football Club’s first eleven may be playing in a different league
                   next season. At a meeting of the club’s players, members and supporters on Monday it
                   was agreed that the committee should consider applying for membership of a different
                   league, yet to be decided upon. Wokingham Town have been members of the Reading
                   and District League for about 20 years. Mr. F. Medcalf presided, supported by the
                   hon. secretary (Mr. J Langley.

                                                 NEXT WEEK’S FILMS
                      “Tea For Two,” showing at the Ritz Cinema, Wokingham, at the beginning of next
                   week, is an adaptation of the famous “No, No Nanette.” The tunes are as catchy as
                   ever, while the dance routines are given full scope. The stars are Doris Day, Gordon
