CARNIVAL QUEEN CHOSEN
At a ball held specially for the occasion, Wokingham’s 1954 Carnival Queen was
chosen in the Drill Hall, Wokingham, on Wednesday. She is dark-haired 17½-years-
old Miss Audrey Frost, of The Diamond, Barkham Road, Wokingham. Miss Frost’s
attendants will be Miss June Pither (16), of 51, Rose Street, Wokingham, a clerk at
Radio Heaters, Ltd., and Miss Freda Merritt (18), of 98, Wescott Road, Wokingham,
employed by Clifford and Sons, dairy men, of Peach Street, Wokingham. The judges
were Miss Sydney Walker, compère of the Carroll Levis production, “Stairway to
Stardom,” and Tommy and Sylvia Snapp, from the same show. They were introduced
by the Mayor, Cllr. R.H. Brimblecombe.

                                               OVER 75s ENTERTAINED
A garden party was held in the grounds of Cantley, Wokingham, on Wednesday—a
garden party with a difference. The host, 76-years-old Mr. P.O. Watson, had given an
open invitation to all the “over 75s” in Wokingham and district, and had the pleasure
of entertaining 100 of them. With his housekeeper, Miss F. Rossell, Mr. Watson, one
of the “youngest “over 75s” present, saw that their friends had everything they
needed, and the clerk of the weather had provided brilliant summer sunshine, with just
a cooling breeze. To Mrs Seaward, the oldest lady in the company, Mr. Watson
himself presented a bouquet of carnations and scabious. During the afternoon the
Embrook W.I. presented a one-act play, “Repent At Leisure,” and there were a
number of competitions. Mr. Watson was thanked by Ald. S.L. Bowyer.
