                                                        NO SALE
Angry housewives marched to the Town Hall, Wokingham, on Thursday after they
had waited for over an hour at the Waterloo Restaurant for a sale which was not held.
The councillors and officials having left, a number of the women went to register a
protest at the police station. The sale was banned by the assistant sanitation inspector,
Mr. R.G. Hopkins, as it contravened the Shop Act.

                                             LOCAL DRIVER HONOURED
The highest award that can be made to a British racing driver competing in a
continental event—the Malcolm Campbell trophy—was presented to Mr. J. Duncan
Hamilton, and ex-Fleet Air Arm pilot, now living in Wokingham, and his co-driver,
Tony Rolt, by Earl Howe at the Royal Automobile Club on Wednesday, in
recognition of their winning last year, the Le Mans 24-hour race. Mr. Hamilton, in a
“C” –type Jaguar XK 120 fitted with disc brakes, drove to fourth place in the British
Empire trophy race on Saturday after winning his heat, in the class for the largest
                   competing cars.

                                                TO BE RE-SUBMITTED
The petition to Her Majesty the Queen for the division of the borough into six
electoral wards has been returned from the office of the Privy Council for re-
submission after the forthcoming municipal elections. The official letter states: “It is
understood from the Home Office that it will not now be possible for a scheme to be
prepared and come into operation in time for this year’s elections. I am to suggest that
having regard to the proposed apportionment of councillors, your council may wish to
consider deferring the re-submission of the petition until after the elections have been
                   held.”
