MAJOR J. L. WILLS
Seriously injured in riding accident
Major John Lycett Wills, aged 50, a member of the Tobacco Company and whose
wife is a cousin of the Queen, is in a London hospital with severe concussion after
being thrown from his horse. The incident occurred when he was riding his grey
gelding, Watney, near his home, Allanbay Park, Binfield, on Monday.
His son, Andrew (23), a godson of the Queen, said on Tuesday: “He was riding at
the side of the road when the horse slipped, possibly frightened by a passing car, and
my father was thrown and struck his head.”
A lorry driver called for help after seeing Major Wills lying in the road, and he was
taken by ambulance to Windsor Hospital. Because of the severity of his injuries he
was, transferred to the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Bloomsbury, London.
The Hon. Mrs. Wills is keeping in constant touch with the hospital.
The Queen has been told of the accident and is being kept up to date with Major
Wills’ condition on Tuesday she sent a personal message from India to Mrs. Wills.
A hospital bulletin issued at noon yesterday (Friday) stated: “Major Wills is still
unconscious and there has not been any further improvements in his condition.

HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION
Mr. C.D. Conway, of Frog Hall Drive, Wokingham, gave an illustrated talk on
“Fertilisers” to members of the Wokingham Horticultural Association at the Molly
Millar Hotel, Wokingham, on Friday last week.

On Friday last week, the 3 Wokingham Scout Group—now in its 11 year—held
an “open night” in the Baptist schoolroom, Wokingham. The programme was
supervised by the acting District Commissioner and Scoutmaster of the Group, Mr.

CIVIL DEFENCE
Following recent successes in examinations, 43 first-aid badges and badges of rank
were presented to members of the Wokingham Civil Defence during a social evening
in the Civil Service headquarters on Thursday last week. Miss D.M. Finch, chairman
of the Wokingham Civil Committee, made the presentations.
METHODIST MEETING
The quarterly leaders' meeting of the Rose Street, Wokingham, Methodist church
was held on Wednesday last week, the Rev. Leonard Hale presiding. The spiritual
condition of the church was reviewed and careful consideration was given to the
pastoral oversight of all church members, the care of the sick and the poor, the
provision of adequate opportunities for Christian fellowship, and the preparation
classes for church membership. In connection with the preparation for church-
membership, the minister reported he would be holding classes in the next few weeks,
for young people wishing to join the church. The membership return for the quarter
was maintained at 113. It was agreed that a letter be issued to all members, to be given
to newcomers to the area, with a personal invitation to attend the Methodist Church.
