furnace fitted at the church. The position of the existing furnace, the problem of
stoking and fuel storage still exist—but one major burden, that of paying for a new
installation has been lifted by the gift of £1,000 from the Marchioness of Ormonde,
who has specified that any balance remaining shall go towards the Structural Repair
Fund.
SOCIAL CLUB SPRING BALL

Rally, held at Wallingford on Saturday and organised by the Berkshire Baptist
Association. They joined in boating and rambling and afterwards took part in the
evening service at Wallingford Baptist Church. The following day, about 30 members
visited the New Mill Chapel on its anniversary. At the anniversary service, Mr. P.
Jerman, the Superintendent of Hoxton Market Christian Mission, officiated. A
member of the Youth Fellowship, Steven Pearson, spent the week-end on a sailing

SCHOOL MAY QUEEN
th
The 11 May Queen of Palmer Infants School—was crowned on Friday last week,
in the grounds of High Close, the Wokingham Dr. Bernardo’s Home. Her crown was
carried in procession by Nicola Hawkins, and her attendants were Ann Lee, Jean
Harris and Sandra Mangnall. Opening the ceremony was John Woolliams in Town
Crier’s uniform, with David Bridges as the herald and Nigel Page as the page.
Following the crowning, the children dressed in smocks and head-dresses, entertained
the visitors present with maypole and other dancing.
The crowning ceremony—performed by Miss E.L. Norris, one of the school
managers—might be the last of its kind, as the present Palmer Infant School will be
transferred to new premises on the Norreys Barn estate later this year, and the head
mistress and founder of the ceremony, Miss E.E. Newson, will not be joining the new
staff. During the morning a collection was taken in aid of the Dr. Bernardo’s Home.
