CYCLISTS CARNIVAL
In connection with the Wokingham Club a most successful cyclists’ carnival took
place on Wednesday evening. The Committee consisted of the following members of
the club. :- Messrs. W.H. Howard (captain, Belcher, Hussey, Harvey, Harries, C.H.
Martin, Taylor, Watts, Tebbitt, Mooray and Heelas (hon. Sec.) had arranged the
programme well. The procession formed outside the Drill Hall shortly after 6 p.m. and
consisted of cyclists in various costumes, decorated cars, and the usual type of
masqueraders. Considerable taste was shown in many of the characters portrayed and
the judges consisting of the Rev. H.M. Walter, Messrs De Vitre (President of the
Club), and Watts, Drs. Heasman and Ward, and Commander Gregorie R.N. had some
difficulty in allocating the prizes which were offered by the Club. The success of the
parade was enhanced by the attendance of the Town Band, the All Saints’ Parish
Band, and the members of the Boys’ Brigade, who acted as lantern and torch bearers,
and the Wokingham Volunteer Fire Brigade on their engine Alert, under the command
of Mr. Ifould (captain). A feature of the procession was several cars illustrating
Britannia (awarded first prize), “Father Time,” and the Royal County Cycling Works,
the latter drawn by a powerful road engine. After parading the streets of the town,
which were thronged with sightseers, the precession dispersed in the Market-place. A
variety concerts was afterwards given in the Drill Hall, and among the contributors to
the programme were Messrs. W.F. Cheeseman, W.J. Hodgson, Harry Russell, Claud
Martin, Ben Lawes, and F. Wigley. Mr. C.H. Martin, organist at the Royal Military
College, was the accompanist. During the carnival a large quantity of confetti was
thrown.

DR. BARNARDO’S HOMES
A meeting in aid of these Homes was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening,
when Major Evered Poole gave an illustrated lecture on the rescue and training of
destitute children through Dr. Bernardo’s Homes and the special work of the Young
Helpers’ League. The Chair was taken by Mr. D. Heelas. It is stated that 75 children
from Berks have been admitted to the House during the last five years. There was a
very good attendance. The Major expressed his sympathy with the work of Dr.
Bernardo. Miss Alice Heelas in hon. Sec. of the Young Helpers’ League.
ACCIDENTS IN SHUTE END
A horse attached to a trap belonging to Mr. Coston was being driven into the town
from the Station-road, on Thursday, shortly before 1 o’clock, when it bolted, being
frightened by a traction engine, and rushed into the chains and posts surrounding the
trees opposite St. Paul’s Rectory, and dislodging three of the posts. Beatrice Kirby,
Bowden, Dean Charlotte Taylor, and Florence Groves, children of St. Paul’s Schools,
were playing on the Green and were injuries. Beatrice Kirby sustained a broken arm
and other injuries, and was conveyed to the Reading Hospital. The other children
received cuts and bruises, Drs. Ward and Barford promptly attended to the injured
little ones. The shafts of the trap were broken, and the driver was thrown violently
out. The children are progressing favourably.
