rooms was undertaken with considerable taste by Messrs. Heelas and Co. of Reading,
                   and  Mr.  R.  herring  of  the  Bush  Hotel,  Wokingham,  catered  for  the  refreshments.
                   About 150 invitations were issued and most of them accepted. Dancing was from 9
                   o’clock till 3 a.m., the music being played by a string band, supplied  by Mr. C.H.
                   Martin, of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. The members of the brigade were in
                   uniform, and a large number of the guests wore fancy costumes of various styles and
                   periods.  The  masters  of  ceremonies,  who  efficiently  carried  out  the  programme
                   arrangements, were Mr. E. Ifould (the captain of the brigade), Mr. A. Goswell (hon.
                   Secretary), and Mr. Metcalf. The other members present, under the command of Mr.
                   Brant  (the  lieutenant),  were  Engineer  Caiger  and  Firemen  W.  Martin,  F.  Martin,
                   Seaward, Knight and Mower.

                                       CHRISTMAS TREE IN THE TOWN HALL
                      The  children  attending  the  British  School  and  the  Baptist  Sunday  School  had  a
                   Christmas tree in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening.

                                   DONATION OF PAINTING FROM REV. PENNY
                      The Mayor read a letter which he had received from Miss Penny on behalf of her
                   brother,  the  Rev.  C.  W.  Penny  announcing  that  an  oil  painting  belonging  to  him
                   should be presented to the Corporation for the Town Hall and also an extract from Mr.
                   Penny’s  note  book  on  Wokingham.  It  was  resolved  to  accept  the  painting  and  the
                   following  resolution  was  unanimously  agreed  upon:-  That  this  Council  gratefully
                   accept and appreciate the generous gift from the Rev. C.W. Penny of the oil painting
                   portrait  of  Prince  George  of  Denmark  and  regard  it  as  a  valuable  addition  to  their
                   collection. They wish to assure him of their very deep regret with which they hear of
                   his serious illness.

                                                ILLUMINATED DANCE
                      A  successful  meeting  in  aid  of  the  Town  Band  was  held  on  Monday  evening  at
                   Clare Court (late Glebelands) by kind permission of Mrs. Hatharall. The band, under
                   Mr. Surman, played a capital selection, and dancing was followed with vigour from 7
                   till 19 o’clock. Mrs. W. White ably-managed the refreshment stall, and the grounds
                   were prettily illuminated.

                                                     EXCURSIONS

                      The 10  annual excursion of the Saw Mills Excursion Club was held on Saturday,
                   the special train leaving Wokingham at 5.23 a.m. and reaching Ramsgate about 8.30.
                   Mr. G.T. Phillips was with the party, and the Borough employees also were included.
                   Margate was visited by many, and a pleasant day’s outing closed at midnight with the
                   arrival  home.  About  600  tickets  were  issued.  On  Monday  several  journeyed  to
                   Hastings by the National Deposit Friendly Society’s excursion.

                                                       MILITARY
                      Each day during the week a small detachment of the Royal Engineers, with pontoon
                   and store wagons has made a mid-day halt at the “Hope and Anchor,” and on Friday a
                   large body of some 130 men, etc., bivouacked near the town, resuming the march on
                   Saturday morning. Each party was  on route from  Aldershot  to  Henley for pontoon
                   practice, and thence they go to the manoeuvres near Salisbury.
