surplus furniture. Happily the efforts of the fire brigade were successful in putting out
                   the flames before much damaged had been done. Fireman Knight was unfortunately
                   cut  on  the  hand  by  broken  glass.  Fireman  Martin  also  received  a  cut  finger.  It  is
                   understood that Mr. Newsome is insured.

                                                 SMOKING CONCERT
                      A successful ‘smoker’ was held at the Club House on Monday evening under the
                   Chairmanship  of  the  Mayor  (Alderman  White)  amongst  those  taking  part  were
                   Messrs. Powell, Richmond, Smith, Thaxter, Day, Kirkham, Harvey, Deane, S. Adams,
                   White, Hussey, Baker and C.H. Martin. Upwards of 66 members were present.

                                                 ST. PAUL’S CHURCH
                      A very handsomely designed Oak Font Cover has been placed in St. Paul’s Church
                   by the family of the late Canon J. T. Brown in memory of the late Canon and Mrs.
                   Brown. It is the work of Mr. Nutt, architect of Windsor and is in keeping with the
                   other beautiful work in the church.

                                            GRAND PATRIOTIC CONCERT
                      A grand patriotic concert, under the patronage of Prince and Princess Christian in
                   aid  of  the  Widows  and  Orphans  of  our  Soldiers  and  Sailors  killed  in  the  War;  is
                   announced to be given in the Drill Hall, Wokingham, on Tuesday next, which it is
                   hoped will be well patronised. Capt. Arthur Hill M.P. will preside. The lowest price
                   for seats will be 2s.

                                           VOLUNTEERS FOR THE FRONT
                      Twenty-two members of the L Wokingham Company of Berkshire Volunteers went
                   to Reading on Thursday for examination as for fitness to go to the front.

                      At a meeting held on  15  Jan. it was  recommended that all the public lamps be
                   cleaned  and  repaired  where  necessary  and  that  5ft  burners  be  used  throughout  the
                                                       th
                   town.  At  a  meeting  held  on  the  25   Jan  it  was  agreed  to  recommend  that,  as  an
                   experiment six Walsbach incandescent burners be obtained and placed in the lamps in
                   Broad-street with three new complete lanterns, the three remaining burners to be used
                   with the lanterns now in use which are to be adapted for the purpose. It was reported
                   that the cleaning and repairing had been attended to and that 5ft burners are used in all
                   the public lamps.
                      Councillor Evans proposed and Councillor Seaward seconded the adoption of the
                   report which was carried.
