POLICE AND CORPORATION IN SHOOTING MATCH
Considerable interest is being taken in the shooting match, which takes place on
Thursday next week, between the Wokingham Corporation and the Wokingham
Police. The Mayor (Alderman F.J. Barrett) has given a cup to be competed for by the
police, and a medal for the runner-up has been offered by Councillor S. Bowyer. After
next week’s shooting match, the Mayor will present the awards.
MINISTER’S DEPARTURE
The Rev. Eric F. Rolls, M.A., the popular Methodist minister at Wokingham, is
leaving towards the end of the summer. He is eventually taking up a missionary
appointment in India. Mr. Rolls, who came to Wokingham from Cambridge in
September last year, has done a tremendous amount of work during his short stay, and
his powerful sermons have been a source of inspiration. A keen worker among young
people, Mr. Rolls’ departure will be regretted by a wide circle of friends.

WOKINGHAM TOWN COUNCIL
Honour for Alderman P. Sale
TO BE FIRST FREEMAN OF THE BOROUGH
Alderman Philip Sale J.P., is to be Wokingham’s first freeman of the borough. This
announcement by the Mayor (Alderman F.J. Barrett) at Thursday’s meeting of the
Council was greeted with applause.
The Mayor said it was the most important thing the council had had before them for
many years. “I think I am right in saying that we have never had a Freeman of the
Borough,” declared the Mayor. A committee was formed to go into the matter, and by
unanimous vote it was decided at the General Purposes Committee meeting that Ald.
Sale, their senior alderman, “father” of the council, and almost “father” of the town,
should be their first Freeman. It was hoped that the honour would be conferred upon
him in the near future. Ald. Sale’s services to the town had extended for a lifetime.
BEATING THE BOUNDS
