THE WALTER MEMORIAL
The Walter memorial, a very beautiful tablet, is now in position in St. Paul’s
Church, and when the decoration of the vestry is completed it is hoped to hold a
                   dedication ceremony.

                                              BATHING IN FULL SWING
Many bathers have taken advantage of the advent of real summerlike weather this
week and had their first dip at Martin’s Bathing Pool, Wokingham, which was opened
                   on Monday.

                                                   LABOUR PARTY
Wokingham Labour Party held their May Day celebrations in the Market Place,
when there was an open-air meeting. Speakers included Mr. E.S. Scott (chairman of
the South Berks Labour Party), Mr. N.C. Lawrence (president of the Wokingham
Labour Party) and Mr. S.J. Miles (hon. Secretary).

                                                  POLICE CHANGES
P.C. Trollope (Theale) has been transferred to Wokingham. P.S. Shand, one of
Wokingham’s most popular officers, retired last week after 26 years’ service with the
force. At one time he was associated with the mounted section and had been stationed
at Reading, Maidenhead and Mortimer before proceeding to Wokingham in 1934. In
his retirement he will reside at Maiden Erlegh.

                                                       CRICKET
Wokingham Police have had a very successful week at cricket. On Saturday they
defeated the Reading Division by 68 runs. It was a personal triumph for P.C. Moon
(Wokingham), who, in addition to scoring 69 not out, took five wickets for 19 runs.
The totals were: Wokingham 131, Reading Police 63. On Wednesday they inflicted a
heavy defeat on Abington Police. The Wokingham total was again 131 (P.S. Frazer
                   34. P.C. Woodridge 24. P.C. Poulter 24). For Abingdon, P.S. Coombe took five
wickets for 53 runs. Thanks to the excellent bowling of P.C. Moon, who took six for
eight, Abingdon were dismissed for 39.

                                           FIRE BRIGADE’S HEAVY WEEK
Just after 1 a.m. on Monday, the Wokingham Fire Brigade, under Captain W.B.
Martin, made a quick response to a call from Winnersh. On arriving at 12, South
View Crescent, they found the house well alight. It appears the fire originated in the
conservatory, where the heat melted the gas meter and the gas had become ignited.
The main tap was turned off, but it was found that the fire had reached the drawing
room adjoining the conservatory. After a hard fight the fire was extinguished. The
                   conservatory was destroyed.
On Tuesday they were called to a small fire in Barkham Ride, where a quantity of
gorse and undergrowth had become ignited.

                                     WELCOME TO SUPERINTENDENT BRABY
At Wokingham Borough Police Court on Tuesday, the Mayor (Alderman F.J.
Barrett) said he felt it his duty and privilege, on behalf of the burgesses, to welcome
Superintendent Braby. There had always been a friendly state of affairs between the
