CHRISTMAS AT THE HOSITAL
Christmas festivities opened on the Saturday before Christmas at the Emergency
Hospital, Barkham Road, with the showing of the film, “Alf’s Button Afloat.” On
Christmas morning each patient received a Christmas card, given by Mrs. Young of
Twyford. Morning service in the chapel was conducted by the Rev. P.J.H. Scott and
broadcast throughout the building. Before the dinner which consisted of roast pork,
roast beef, chicken, beer and Christmas pudding, etc., the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr.
and Mrs. Reeves), Ald. W.T. Martin and Mr. G. MacLoughlin toured the various gaily
decorated wards. The Mayor and Mayoress presented the children with sixpence each,
as did Ald. W.T. Martin. Each child also received a threepenny-piece from Ald. F.J.
Barrett. Ald. Martin congratulated the committee on the excellent work they had
carried out during the year, and called for a vote of thanks for the excellent dinner
served by Miss Heath, the cook, and her staff. He concluded by remarking upon the
generosity of Miss Huggins, of Twyford, who had once more forwarded a shilling for
each patient. A visit from Santa Claus after tea was made possible the generosity of a
local firm.
In the evening a variety concert was given by members of the staff, and on Boxing
Night the staff dinner took place in the dining hall, followed by a social evening. The
film, “Charlie’s Aunt,” was shown to an appreciative audience the following evening,
and on Monday the Mayor and Mayoress of Wokingham paid the train fares for a trip
by the children to se, “Robinson Crusoe” at the Palace Theatre, Reading. From 8.30 to
12 the same evening an Army dance band provided the music for the staff dance.
