FIRE FIGHTERS ENROL
Many firefighters have been enrolling during the week at the Town Hall, and more
are wanted, to safeguard buildings in Wokingham. The fire-fighters will be detailed
under their own air raid warden.
WEA LECTURE
Continuing his series of lectures for the W.E.A. on “Italy and the Italian People,” at
the Town Hall last Monday, Mr. A.G. Macrial’s subject was, “Renaissance—St.
Francis of Assisi.”
WOMEN’S SECTION BRITISH LEGION
The annual meeting of the Women’s British Legion, Wokingham was held on

October 22 at “Mertonford,” by permission of Col. And Mrs. Anderson. It was
stated that 137 garments had been dispatched to the R.A.F. Comforts Fund, 46 to the
Royal Navy Depot, 111 to the Army Comforts Fund, Reading, 59 to the Berks County
Collecting Depot, and 56 to the local Home Guard, making a total of 409 garments.
Mrs. Eustace, organiser with Mr. A Andrews of Poppy Day collection, asked for
helpers for collecting on Poppy Day. The officers and committee were re-elected.
TENNIS FOR RED CROSS
Several famous tennis players took part in tennis matches in aid of Red Cross, held
at the En Tout Cas Courts. Miss Jean Nicholl, the England player, beat Miss Audrey
Cardinal, of Wimbledon and Middlesex, 6—4 in the first set. The game was stopped
when Miss Cardinal fell on the court in the second set. The second match between
Derrick Barton, Essex junior triples champion, and Leslie Cator, Essex county and a
Wimbledon player, thrilled the crowd, Barton winning 6—3, 5—7, 6—2. Miss
Cardinal, in spite of her fall, completed the four players in the mixed doubles.
Although the game was extremely hard fought Miss Jean Nicholl and Mr. Derrick
won 6—2, 6—4. The sum of £21 10s. 6d. was handed to the Hospital Supplies Depot
of the Berkshire branch of the Red Cross, consisting of £12 9s. 6d. from a collection,
and £9 1s. from a mock auction and a draw held between the matches. The Mayor
thanked all those who had assisted, especially the proprietors of the courts, Mr. A.
Pollecutt and Mr. E. Fidler.

WAR SAVINGS
£17,217 has been raised in the last four weeks for War Savings.
PRESUMED KILLED
Pilot Officer William Kenneth Manifold, R.A.F., aged 23, who was the assistant
sanitary inspector of the Wokingham R.D.C. before 1937, and the son of Mr. and Mrs.
William Maniford, of Clare Court, Cottage, Wokingham, has been reported missing,
presumed killed.
WOKINGHAM FIRE GUARDS
“The business area of Wokingham. Near the Town Hall, is the best protected area
from the point of view of Fire Guards,” said Mr. A.H.L. Beale, local A.R.P.
Controller to our representative, commenting on the Fire Guard registration, which
began last week.
