During  the  war  Mr.  Dearlove  was  a  member  of  the  “Specials,”  but  his  greatest
                   interest  was  the  Wokingham  Volunteer  Fire  Brigade,  which  he  served  for  over  50
                   years, and he was actively engaged as a volunteer member of the N.F.S. up to a few
                   months ago.
                      And  so  Fireman  Dearlove  has  answered  his  last  call,  and  on  Wednesday  he  was
                   accorded  the  honour  of  a  fireman’s  funeral,  his  coffin  being  borne  to  All  Saints’
                   Church on the fire engine, the cortège being  led by his  firemen colleagues.  At the
                   church  his  coffin  was  carried  on  the  shoulders  of  four  fireman  while  other
                   representatives of the Voluntary Fire Brigade and Wokingham and Bracknell N.F.S.
                   formed a guard of honour.
                      A widower for seven years, Mr. Dearlove is survived by one son and one daughter

                                        WOKINGHAM’S NEW TOWN CLERK
                      For the first time in the history of the Borough, Wokingham will have a full-time
                   Town Clerk at a salary of £500 per annum. He is Mr. L.G. Smalley, who has been
                   selected  for  the  post  from  twenty-four  applicants.  Mr.  Smalley  succeeds  Mr.  J.H.
                   Elliston Clifton, who  is retiring from  his  official  position on August 1st, to  devote
                   more time to his legal practice.
                      Married, with two children, Mr. Smalley is thirty-seven years of age, and has spent
                   twenty-two years in local government.
                      A native of Oadby, Leicestershire, he was educated at the Newarke and City School
                   and University College, Leicester. In April 1924 he was appointed Assist. Clerk  of
                   Oadby  Urban  District  Council  and  became  Deputy  Clerk  of  the  same  council  in
                   January 1928. In April 1929 he was appointed Clerk, Chief Financial Officer, Rating
                   and  Valuation  Officer  of  the  Burton  Latimer  Urban  District  Council,
                   Northamptonshire.
                      His social interests include that of the Burton Latimer Baptist Church, of which he
                   is Deacon and Treasurer. He is also Treasurer of the Kettering and District Fellowship
                   of  Baptist  Churches,  and  Hon.  Secretary  and  Treasurer  of  the  Burton  Latimer
                   Tuberculosis Care Committee.
                      A keen sportsman, Mr. Smalley finds time for recreative amusements in tennis and
                   swimming, also poultry breeding and carpentry.

                      On Tuesday members of the All Saints’ Mothers’ Meeting had a trip to Worthing by
                   motor-coach.—The Sunday schools of Wokingham, churches, chapels, and Salvation
                   Army went on Wednesday, in a convoy of motor-coaches, on a combined outing to
                   Bognor.

                                            MENTIONED IN DISPATCHES
                      Cllr.  S.L.  Bowyer  has  been  mentioned  in  dispatches  in  recognition  of  his
                   outstanding services with the B.L.A. in Germany between the early part of 1944 and

                   May 31 , 1945, when he was wounded. An acting sergeant, Cllr. Bowyer was with the
                                                       st
                   allied Mission Camp, Main H.Q., 21  Army Group B.L.A., ad had a more exacting
                   task than most N.C.O.s. As clerk, storekeeper and disciplinarian, he was dealing with
                   men  of  five  different  nationalities.  He  was  demobilised  last  December  after  a
                   gruelling  time  in  various  convalescent  hospitals.  Cllr.  Bowyer  was  elected  to  the
                   Wokingham Town Council in 1931, and was at that time the youngest councillor.
