The wardens spoke in glowing terms of the rector’s excellent teaching and fine
leadership, and of Mrs. Scott’s many acts of Christian kindness. The rector, in
replying, said how very moved he was by the kindness shown, and expressed his
heartfelt thanks to all. Mr. Scott is leaving St. Paul’s to take up the duties of Chaplain
to St. Mary’s Abbey, West Malling.

CANTEEN SOCIAL
There was a social for Church Army canteen workers and troops on Tuesday. Capt.
Rogers’ concert party provided the entertainment.
SERVICES FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN
On Ash Wednesday morning, the children of Palmer School and Wescott Road
attended a service at All Saints’, and those of St. Paul’s School went to St. Paul’s.
ON LEAVE FROM INDIA
Mr. Peter May of London Road, Wokingham, is home on a month’s leave after
service in India. Unfortunately he arrived a fortnight too late for his brother’s
wedding. Also on a month’s leave from India is gunner John Hopkins, of
Easthampstead Road.
NEW RECTOR’S INDUCTION
The induction of the new Rector of St. Paul’s, the Ven. Archdeacon Herbert
Thorndike Shaw, was performed by the Bishop of Reading, on Saturday. The service,
which was attended by the local clergy and a large congregation, was followed by tea
in the Parish Room.
MENTIONED IN DISPATCHES
Flight Lieutenant A.F. Betts, whose wife and family are at present residing at
Toutley Hall, Wokingham, has recently learned that he has been mentioned in
dispatches in the New Year’s Honours List, having carried out special work in Italy.
Flight Lieutenant Betts is still serving in the Central Mediterranean Forces, and is
officer in command of a parachute unit.
ATTENDED MEMORIAL SERVICE
Mr. and Mrs. W. Smith, of Holmwood, Forest Road, Wokingham, were among the
relatives who attended the memorial service at Colchester in remembrance of the
officers and ship’s company of the submarine H.M.S. Porpoise, which was presumed
lost with all hands off the straits of Malacca just over a year ago. Their son, Roy, was
a member of the crew.
SAVINGS TARGET FIXED
A target of £10 per head of the population, or approximately £400,000, has been
adopted by the Wokingham and Rural District Local Savings Committee for its target

for the year starting April 1 . This decision was taken at a rally for group organisers
and secretaries, held at the Wokingham Town Hall on Saturday. The chief speaker
was Miss Jean Batten, who gave a most inspiring talk, and speeches were also made
by the Mayor of Wokingham and Col. C.D. Burnell, chairman of the Rural District
Council. An excellent tea was arranged by the W.V.S., following which a short recital
was given by the Cecilian Singers under their conductor, Mr. Arthur Yould.
